Senior Climate Scientist
Australia, remote or hybrid
About us
XDI (Cross Dependency Initiative) is a specialist, mission-led physical climate risk analytics company, focused on changing how climate risk is understood, valued and acted on by the institutions that shape the global economy.
Established in 2007, XDI is the world’s longest-standing independent specialist in physical climate risk and adaptation analytics, and is recognised as a global leader in the Forrester Wave™: Climate Risk Analytics Software (2025) and the 2024 Verdantic Smart Innovator report. We translate climate risk into financially decision-useful intelligence, enabling decision-makers to plan for resilience and adaptation, and to redirect capital away from high-risk, high-emission activities toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. Our clients include major banks, investors, asset owners and governments around the world, and we increasingly partner with academic institutions and NGOs to help deliver our impact goals.
XDI is part of The Climate Risk Group. Across the group, we have around 50 team members based in Australia and Europe.
The Role
As a Senior Climate Scientist, you will ensure our climate risk models, methodologies, and metrics are robust and meet the overall objectives of our Product Roadmap and our clients' needs.
You will focus on utilising mathematical and computational techniques to estimate climate-related risks and financial models to quantify building and productivity losses from climate change. You will be accountable for the end-to-end development, maintenance and documentation of our hazard models. You will own models’ methodologies and archetypes, managing prioritisation of new hazards and hazard improvement, ensuring our data and models are kept up-to-date and fit-for-purpose.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Defining fit-for-purpose model scope aligned to commercial, technical, and regulatory constraints
- Researching, developing, validating, and implementing hazard, impact, and predictive models, managing data and model uncertainty
- Applying advanced statistical, machine learning, and deep learning techniques to complex climate and hazard modelling problems
- Performing advanced temporal and spatial data analysis, including preprocessing, enhancement, and integration of diverse datasets
- Applying climate science expertise in extreme weather and climate phenomena to inform risk assessment and model design
- Using multi-model and ensemble approaches to improve robustness and reliability of predictions
- Maintaining clear, auditable model documentation for internal teams, clients, and regulators
- Managing the full model lifecycle, including inventories, versioning, validation, and change management
- Applying and contributing to regulatory-ready model governance frameworks, ensuring compliance and reliability
- Identifying, assessing, and mitigating model, data, and client impact risks in line with organisational governance standards
- Communicating scientific insights, visualisations, and analysing effectively to internal and external stakeholders
- Supporting business growth through leadership, innovation, partnerships, mentoring, and translating technical capability into customer value
Capabilities sought-after:
- Deep expertise in climate systems, climate change, variability, and extreme events, with the ability to apply this knowledge to real-world hazard and risk problems
- Strong scientific research capability, including rigorous methodology design, analysis, interpretation, and clear communication to technical and non-technical audiences
- Advanced statistical analysis and computational skills, with strong proficiency in Python for data processing, modelling, and analytics
- Hands-on experience with modern scientific, geospatial, and data-science tools (e.g. xarray, geopandas, dask, rasterio, shapely, PyTorch, TensorFlow)
- Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g. QGIS) for spatial analysis, data integration, and visualisation
- Strong foundation in applied mathematics, numerical methods, modelling, and extreme value analysis
- Experience applying machine learning, deep learning, and automation to operational and analytical use cases
- Proven ability to design, build, validate, and deploy scalable hazard and risk models fit for commercial or operational use
- Working knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and best-practice frameworks, and the ability to align outputs accordingly
- Ability to translate complex analysis into clear, actionable insights for executives, clients, partners, and regulators
- Strong data visualisation skills to communicate complex information effectively and support decision-making
- Leadership capability, including mentoring, knowledge sharing, and contributing to product development and a high-performing team culture
