Supported by leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. Join us in powering a better world with inertial fusion!

As a Vacuum System Design Engineer, you will lead the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of high vacuum and gas delivery systems for next‑generation nuclear fusion energy technology. You will contribute across the full engineering lifecycle—including conceptual design, requirements definition, analysis, structural layout, integration, test, and operations. This role requires creative problem‑solving, rigorous engineering judgment, and innovative manufacturing approaches to enable reliable high‑pressure, high‑vacuum, and high‑purity gas delivery systems.

We are seeking an engineer who brings deep technical expertise, strong ownership, and a commitment to quality to accelerate the future of clean energy—while embodying Rigorous Urgency in all phases of execution. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

  • Design and integrate vacuum pumping and high purity gas delivery subsystems.
  • Develop and release Plumbing & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Apply strong fundamentals in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to guide design decisions.
  • Select and integrate key components including pumps, Mass Flow Controllers, pneumatic valves, regulators, fittings, custom weldments, and instrumentation.
  • Author component specifications and manage suppliers through design, development, qualification, and hardware delivery.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to ensure system compatibility and resolve integration challenges with informed, calculated risk.
  • Lead and participate in component‑ and system‑level testing, including data analysis and test reporting.
  • Establish and manage relationships with suppliers.
  • Manage schedules, suppliers, budgets, and deliverables with disciplined project management.
  • Use 3D CAD (NX preferred), FEA, and CFD tools (ANSYS, Altair preferred) for detailed design and analysis.
  • Deliver fully documented designs using best drafting practices per ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards, including clear analysis and margin‑of‑safety reports.

Qualifications

  • Education: B.S. degree in engineering (or equivalent discipline).
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience engineering vacuum or gas delivery systems.
  • Proven experience in vacuum system design and/or test.
  • Experience in selecting pumps and instruments.
  • Strong understanding of valves, pressure vessels, flex elements, fittings, and related hardware.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and integration processes, including tubing/piping and machined components.
  • Working knowledge of materials, coatings, and treatments.
  • Hands‑on experience troubleshooting hardware.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired

  • Experience with high‑vacuum systems and cryogenic pumps.
  • Familiarity with noble and reactive gas properties.
  • Experience designing valves and other fluid components.
  • Background with data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with orbital tube welding processes.
  • Experience with abatement systems.
