Programme Lead, Climate Change
Purpose of Job
The Climate Change Programme Lead will spearhead WWF-Malaysia’s climate change programme. The Programme Lead as a staff of the Conservation Department will be guided by and contribute directly or indirectly to the achievement of WWF-Malaysia Strategy (2023-2030), the WWF Network’s Roadmap 2030 and WWF-Malaysia’s Climate Change Strategy (2023-2030) along with any revisions of these documents.
This role focuses on implementing strategic interventions across climate adaptation and mitigation, fostering partnerships, and promoting nature-based and inclusive solutions to address climate risks. The Lead will oversee programme planning, team management and collaboration with stakeholders to contribute to Malaysia’s transition toward a climate-resilient and low-carbon future.
The role provides technical and operational deliverables for the Climate Change Strategy. The ideal candidate will have a strong specialisation in project management and technical reporting, with the ability to manage complex tasks and responsibilities with minimal supervision. This role involves ensuring that all aspects of the Climate Change Strategy align cohesively to achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) and deliverables.
Reporting to the Director of Policy and Climate Change, the position will also involve substantial liaison with all other Heads of Conservation as well as programme leads to ensure synergy between the Climate Change Programme and other programmes for impactful conservation outcomes.
Key Outputs
- To ensure the deliverables of the Climate Change Programme are on track by each financial year and to oversee the progress of Climate Change Programme as well as those specified as organisational KPIs relating to the Climate Change Programme.
- To ensure as needed, work plans for the different strategies of the Climate Change Programme are aligned with other strategies of thematic and cross-cutting programmes/units including policy, community, education and sustainable finance.
- Network with relevant stakeholders and potential partners to create partnerships for potential climate action project implementation.
- Identify and secure funding opportunities including grant applications and donor engagement.
Major Activities
- Coordinate and supervise the Climate Change Programme team to deliver strategies including its objectives through regular discussions to review action plans, monitor budget, monitor Planned Intermediate Results (PIR) and update objectives & goals monitoring plan
- Coordinate the provision of support from Project Development and Monitoring Team on reporting and implementing adaptive change if required for effective attainment of the Climate Change Programme’s goal and objectives.
- Develop and oversee the Climate Change Programme, ensuring alignment with national and international direction from WWF International and the WWF Climate and Energy Practice (CEP).
- Coordinate and work collaboratively with all Heads of Conservation and various thematic programme leads to ensure alignment of strategies and work plan with the Climate Change Programme.
- Monitor and evaluate project impacts, oversee technical progress reports, internal and external reporting, ensuring effective reporting and compliance with regulations.
- Develop, submit and monitor funding proposals to private sector, public grants, and network donors and drive fundraising efforts.
- Analyse, support and contribute to advocacy and programme positioning on climate change matters relevant to Malaysia. Communicate key findings and programme outcomes through reports, presentations, and advocacy materials.
- Undertake or recommend capacity-building training for the Climate Change Programme team members, including supervision, coaching and guidance for goals, strategies and objectives implementation.
- Convene and/or participate in team, organisational and/or external meetings with professionalism.
Specifications
- University degree, but preferably a Master’s degree, in environmental, or social policy or science. A degree related to climate policy, sciences, management or environmental sustainability would be a distinct advantage.
- At least ten (10) years of professional experience in climate change, conservation or environmental management or research.
- Experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, excellent analytical, research, and report-writing skills. Such experience in climate adaptation and/or mitigation using nature based solutions would be an added advantage.
- In-depth knowledge and commitment on the issues of climate change and conservation in Malaysia.
- Substantial experience of working with government (Federal and/or State level) and corporate bodies.
- Good interpersonal skills and innovative thinking. Mature, able to work with minimum supervision both in the field and office.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven track of acting with professionalism in leading and managing multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and oral skills in English. Communication skills in Bahasa Malaysia is a requirement.
- Must be computer literate and have the ability to use appropriate technology for presentation to partners, stakeholders and potential donors.

Salary Range
RM5,800 - RM12,000
