Job Highlight:
WRI India is seeking an Intern (GIS) to support the urban mangroves project, housed within its urban water and climate resilience work. WRI India brings deep expertise across its practice areas, spanning climate adaptation, nature-based solutions, urban and regional planning, water resilience, and governance. As a trusted knowledge partner, WRI India works closely with governments, communities, and research institutions to translate science into policy and on-ground action.
The GIS Intern will support WRI India by strengthening the spatial evidence base for urban mangrove management, vulnerability assessments, and climate resilience planning. The role will involve compiling, cleaning, and managing spatial datasets related to mangrove/coastal ecosystems, land use, hydrology etc., The intern will assist in producing high-quality maps and geospatial analyses to support project planning, field assessments, and stakeholder engagement.
What you will do:
Research & Analysis (70%)
- Conduct spatial data exploration, qualitative and quantitative analysis to support mangrove/coastal ecosystem assessments.
- Source, compile, and organize geospatial datasets from multiple repositories (government portals, satellite data, open-source platforms, and project teams).
- Clean, manage, and integrate spatial and non-spatial datasets to support GIS analysis and spatial modeling.
- Support the development of thematic maps and geospatial layers related to mangrove distribution, land use/land cover, hydrology, coastal infrastructure, and ecological features.
- Support ground-truthing and validation of spatial data through field inputs and stakeholder consultations where required.
Technical Support & Outreach (30%)
- Prepare high-quality maps, dashboards, and visualizations for use in presentations, reports, publications, and digital platforms.
- Assist in preparing spatial outputs for workshops, stakeholder consultations, and participatory mapping exercises.
- Contribute to maintaining organized geospatial data repositories and documentation for project teams.
What you will need:
- Postgraduate degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Natural Resources Management, Geoinformatics, or a related discipline from a recognized university or institution.
- 0–1 year of relevant experience in the Urban Planning, regional development and Design field with working experience in GIS and ArcGIS online; fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Working proficiency in ArcMap Desktop (Advanced) and ArcGIS Online, including ArcGIS applications, is required.
- Experience with spatial analysis and modeling using tools such as ArcGIS Spatial Analyst or equivalent platforms.
- Additional proficiency in QGIS, Google Maps, APIs, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint are required.
- Familiarity with programming and scripting languages such as Python, VB Script, R, or JavaScript will be considered an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability in data collection, validation, research, and analytical workflows.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage and interpret complex datasets.
- High attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks or project components simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and diverse team environment.
- Consistently strong academic record.
Location: Mumbai/ Chennai/ Remote
Stipend: INR 25,000/ month
Duration: 3 months
