PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Grieg Group is implementing a project funded by the Grieg Foundation titled, “Clean ports, clean oceans. Improving port waste management in the Philippines”. This project aims to reduce the flow of plastic waste entering nature and the ocean. Its goals include (1) working towards a 50% reduction of plastic waste in at least 3 Philippine ports, (2) providing input to the national action plan on port waste management to highlight the importance of the port industry in addressing plastic pollution, and (3) documenting the project to enable scaling up in other Philippine and global ports.
The project has implemented circular solutions with relevant port stakeholders including the Philippine Ports Authority and Maritime Industry Authority to reduce port- and ship-generated wastes. Interventions are also conducted in adjacent communities to the 3 project sites namely the Manila North Port, Port of Batangas, and Port of Cagayan de Oro. Project activities include the pilot of entrepreneurial solutions, establishing a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), communications, and supporting waste workers.
With the project’s milestones, WWF is hiring a photo and video team to develop the project videos to cover all interventions implemented in the Manila North Port, Port of Batangas, and overall activities.
