WRI’s air quality program is a global initiative that seeks to identify, build awareness of, and eliminate the root causes of air pollution that damages climate, human, and ecosystem health. The program has three main areas of work: (i) engagement with city stakeholders to use participatory science to diagnose and develop targeted, cost-effective clean air solutions to protect human health and climate, (ii) working with the science community to convert innovative methods into tools and products that communities and policymakers can use to better manage their impact on the atmosphere, and (iii) working with national governments and business networks to design and implement broader regional-to-global air quality governance. It is a part of the WRI Ross Center on Sustainable Cities, with additional oversight from the Data Lab and engagement with Climate, Governance, Energy, and other programs at WRI. The team is global, with senior experts distributed across WRI’s network of international offices
WRI Indonesia air quality program is growing along with the new USAID-funded program called “Clean Air Catalyst”, which will be implemented by a global consortium that WRI is leading with EDF and other partners. The consortium includes six additional partners: Clean Air Toolbox for Cities (Columbia University), Climate and Clean Air Coalition, Internews Network, MAP-AQ, OpenAQ, and Vital Strategies. The program will work in three pilot regions with WRI international offices and local partners to test and refine a three-part data to action methodology for improving air quality and delivering climate co-benefits. We plan to work with local partners in three pilot regions – one of which is Jakarta, Indonesia – to test and refine a three-part data to action methodology for improving air quality and delivering climate co-benefits.
The Post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for any research or science-related activities. The research may include air quality data collection and monitoring both primary and secondary sources, data analysis, emission inventory, source apportionment, air pollution dispersion and receptor modeling, and technical writing for the report or analysis under the CAC project. The candidate will work closely with the local and global science teams.
The candidate will be required to support the design of the study, data collection, analysis, and scientific research paper writing.
The candidate will handle a range of responsibilities. The key responsibilities will include:
- Working on Air Quality research activities that may include but not limited to constructing a research framework/concept note/proposal, data collection / sampling, data analysis, and air dispersion modelling. The research is such as source apportionment, emissions inventory, air quality monitoring, and root cause analysis of air pollution. (50%)
- Writing technical reports, paper and other knowledge products (10 %).
- Liaise with local and global science teams (CAC project partners), experts, researchers, government official and other related stakeholder to facilitate the development of high-quality research and pilot design. (10 %)
- Join and present as necessary in an online/offline meeting related to science or research activities such as CAC Global Science Check-in and others. (30 %)
- Ph.D. in Environmental Science/ Environmental Engineering/ Civil Engineering/ Climate Science/ Physics/ Chemistry/ Atmospheric Sciences/ Aerosol Science/ Geophysics & Meteorology or a related quantitative field.
- Strong background in atmospheric chemistry or physics, and/or air quality research including sampling, monitoring analysis, and reporting is preferred.
- Significant background in handling and processing large data sets and / or in using air dispersion modeling tools such as WRF, WRF-Chem, AERMOD, CALPUFF, CALROADS or other is a plus.
- Working experience with knowledge and use of air quality instruments either reference grade or low-cost sensor is desirable.
- International work/study experience and working experience with international donor particularly USAID will be valuable but not a must. electrical Engineering
- Demonstrated exceptional ability (through published work, articles, etc.) to write and comprehend effectively
- Strong analytical research skills-ability to communicate complex concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, with English fluency.
- Willingness to travel frequently to Jakarta for project activities if needed; Proximity to Jakarta is desirable
Monthly consolidated report on delivery, achievement, and lessons learned which correspond to:
- Successful implementation of air quality of research, including research design, air quality sampling (collection of data through regulatory grade and low-cost instruments), maintain/monitor the air quality monitoring process and data analysis and reporting.
- Wrote technical quarterly reports on study results
- Successful engagements with key air quality and atmospheric scientists or related stakeholders
3 (three) months of initial contract with possibility of extension up to 1 (one) year subject to individual performance review.
Terms of Payment
Daily-rate based consultant with maximum 18 (eighteen) working days per month.
Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.
Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.
Consultant rate: Consultant rate is commensurate with experience and skills.
