Intern for Sustainable Transport, Cities Program

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You will be based in our office in WRI Indonesia, Jakarta. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia seeks to assist the Government of Indonesia in enhancing and mainstreaming innovative low-carbon development approaches to transform and decarbonize the transportation sector including addressing mobility issues in metropolitan cities of Indonesia that would pave the way for sustainable development and help achieve the government’s bold climate target ie. Net zero-emission.

WRI Indonesia in collaboration with the UK Government through its Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (UK FCDO) has initiated partnering cooperation under the UK Partnering for Accelerating Climate Transitions (UK PACT) to provide programmatic and technical advisory support in expediting decarbonization in Transport sector and tackle climate crisis. The project, which holds the title “Advancing MRV System for Emission Inventory and Mitigation Actions to accelerate Transport Decarbonization in Indonesia”, recognizes the role of WRI Indonesia to lead policy advocacy, technical support, and analytics to National governments, particularly in designing tools and composing strategies for the transition towards a low-carbon and inclusive transportation system. This initiative builds on WRI Indonesia’s support for the Ministry of Transport over the past two years. Together with consortium partners, the UK PACT project strengthens evidence-based policy making and monitoring systems for transport mitigation actions. Additionally, it supports stakeholders in tracking progress toward Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and in developing robust low-carbon strategies for the transportation sector.

General Internship Roles

Sustainable Transport Intern will have the opportunity to contribute to accelerate low-carbon transition in Indonesia’s transport sector through data-driven research, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement under a nationally significant climate initiative. The internship offers hands on experience to collaborate with mobility teams to collect and analyze transport emission data, support the development of emission inventory tools, and assist in drafting technical briefs and policy roadmaps. Additionally, the Intern will also be actively involved in preparing summaries of sectoral regulations, tracking project activities, and supporting coordination with government and partner institutions to promote sustainable and inclusive transport systems.

Based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement, the intern will report directly to Low Carbon Transport Program Coordinator while also while also supervised by Transport Decarbonization Analyst. What You Will Learn

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding sustainable mobility and transport decarbonization, including key policy frameworks, Indonesia’s climate commitments, and international standard on reporting frameworks (e.g., NDC, MRV systems, and carbon levy mechanisms).
  • Contribute in-depth analysis and review of the Ministry of Transport KM 8/2023, including an assessment of its implementation status, alignment with climate targets, and potential gaps or areas for improvement.
  • Contribute to the development of WRI knowledge product/publication on the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system, including its methodologies for emission inventory and monitoring efforts in the transport sector.
  • Participate in technical research and data-driven decision making through data analysis, data management, regulatory reviews, emission inventory tools, and mitigation actions.
  • Gain hands-on experience in end-to-end project management activities, including documentation, stakeholder coordination, and tracking project activities while contributing to the development of effective materials for engagement and project’s activities
  • Gain hands-on experience in national level stakeholder engagement processes through collaboration with, governments, NGOs, and development partners, and contributing to inclusive, evidence-based policy development using GEDSI-informed approaches
  • Developing communications and interpersonal skills.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree from relevant field such as Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Public Policy, Transportation Studies, or a related field. Final-year student are welcome to apply.
  • Demonstrated interest in climate change, urban mobility, or sustainable development through coursework, projects, or extracurricular involvement;
  • Basic experience in research methodology, data management tools and software, data analysis software such as Microsoft Excel, R, and others, and literature review;
  • Business proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia both verbal and written;
  • Highly motivated, target-oriented, strong can-do attitude, proactive work style, excellent organizational skills, and able to work independently and as a team player;
  • Ability to use personal initiative and creativity to solve research problems;
  • Legally able to enroll on an internship program in Indonesia.

Duration

The internship program is expected to start immediately for a 3-months contract period.

Internship Terms

This is a paid internship program. Intern will actively participate on the program activities and entitled for a compensation on monthly basis.
