Mission: Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell) conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature. We partner with leaders and communities for just meaningful impact to address the climate crisis.


Summary/Objective:
We seek applicants for one summer field assistant position to work on local Massachusetts coastal wetland projects. The successful applicant will work assessing many different components of ecosystem response, including hydrology, plants, animals and biogeochemistry. The successful applicant will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of PIs, postdocs, graduate students and other research assistants to gain broad experience through field and laboratory work across interdisciplinary fields including biology, chemistry, and hydrology.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in field and laboratory measurements of biology, chemistry, and hydrology.
  • Maintain and download equipment (water level loggers, YSI’s, etc.).
  • Collect, process and analyze project samples and data, including elevation, soils, plants and animals.
  • Create and organize data sets in Excel and analyze in Excel or R-Studio.
  • Sample at irregular hours (early mornings, late nights, and weekends) as needed. Must have flexibility pertaining to specific hours on any given day.
  • Frequent contact with the public, students, and visiting scientists will be required.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.A. or B.S. in Ecology, Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental science.
  • Must have relevant coursework in Ecology, Biology, Chemistry, or Marine Biology.
  • Must be familiar with the techniques to quantify wetland and river ecology, and best practices for field safety.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills and work ethic.
  • The ability to work as a member of a team and independently and communicate clearly.
  • The ability to work across a variety of projects to prioritize tasks proactively, efficiently and reliably.
  • Strong computer skills, including data organization, analysis, and report writing using Excel, Word, and R-studio.
  • Must possess a valid driver license and qualify to drive a Woodwell vehicle or provide own transportation to field sites.
  • Experience with data loggers and environmental sensors.
  • Ability to identify wetland plants and animals.
  • Experience in field ecology in any environment is strongly preferred.
  • This position is in-person at our Falmouth, Massachusetts campus and local MA wetland research sites.

Physical requirements:

  • Must be capable of rigorous outdoor activity. Must be capable of lifting approximately forty pounds, bending, carrying heavy equipment, and walking through waist-high marine waters and over uneven soggy wetlands.
  • Must be capable of walking for long distances while carrying heavy and awkward equipment.
  • Exposure to sun, insects, ticks and poison ivy and inclement weather will be part of the position.

Classification and Compensation:
This is a temporary (four months), full-time, nonexempt, fixed term position. The hourly rate is $20.00 per hour dependent on qualifications/experience.
