We are looking for a Head of Flight Physics to join our team and lead our Flight Physics IPT. The goal of the Head of Flight Physics at Wisk is to ensure that the aircraft is safe and able to be certified. You will be part of the Wisk Gen 6 aircraft team that is bringing a commercial autonomous air taxi to the market.

This is a hybrid work opportunity. At Wisk, this means working onsite at our Mountain View HQ or Montreal office 3 days per week with flexibility for the remainder of the days.

As part of the Gen 6 aircraft team organization you will act as the head of Flight Physics for a novel type of aircraft development targeting the autonomous UAM market. The Head of Flight Physics will lead teams of engineers responsible for all aspects of aircraft flight physics. This includes conceptual design, aerodynamic analysis, aero model development and validation, loads and dynamics analysis, control algorithm design, performance, and physics simulator development. Your responsibilities will span all stages of the development program.

Role Responsibilities:

  • You will provide technical oversight, a clear direction for the team, manage priorities, and provide coordination with the rest of the aircraft team.

  • Hire, reward, mentor, retain, and support the development of great people.

  • Provide programmatic support including: planning, budget development, and process development

  • Engage proactively with program leaders to ensure alignment, and clear communication of solutions and issues.

  • You will take part in supporting the development of Gen 6 aircraft by ensuring that the aircraft is able to meet product, certification and safety requirements.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 18+ years of industry experience in aircraft and rotorcraft aerodynamics, Masters preferred.

  • Understanding of rotorcraft and multirotor aircraft aerodynamics.

  • Experience with commercial aviation development and Certification as well as rapid rapid development of novel, complex systems.

  • Familiarity with control law development including: controller design and tuning, controller analysis, over actuated systems, and allocation.

  • Familiarity with aerodynamic data base creation and tools such as CFD, wind tunnel testing, data processing, and flight matching.

  • Experience with aerodynamic design and analysis of aircraft to meet performance goals

  • Experience creating vehicle simulation models that support certification compliance showing.

  • Experience with load case definition and development to support vehicle design, and flight clearance

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • You are excited to learn about the team, and leverage the hard learned lessons of the past 14+ years of eVTOL development here at Wisk.

Desired:

  • Experience with multiple objective optimization and trade-off studies

  • Aeromechanics and/or rotor dynamics experience

  • Understanding of DO-178B/C software certification standards

  • Expert knowledge of aircraft, helicopter, or VTOL GNC systems and software

  • Experience with Model Based Design

  • Familiarity with developing safety critical software

  • Familiarity with Matlab/Simulink and C/C++, specifically for embedded software

  • Familiarity with Jira, Git, or other software product lifecycle management tools

Pay Range the Company expects to pay: $264,296 - $310,937 per year - The starting base salary within this range for this role varies based on factors such as your geographical location, and your relevant job-related experience that is consistent with a business necessity.
