Analytical Team Leader
Working in the Stage release and Certification Laboratory, operational and technical support advisors are expected to provide a high calibre of analytical knowledge and process control to aid the Chemical Services department to deliver on customer requirements for the production of fuel, intermediates, residue recovery, material characterisation and growth projects. Within the area they are expected to own a particular subset of techniques ensuring analytical equipment is sought, purchased and maintained to ensure customer analysis demands are met. They are responsible for leading a small team of analysts providing training, guidance and support though daily activities, and ensuring that ISO 17025 accreditation is maintained. The successful candidate will receive full training for this role to be carried out.
Key responsibilities:
- Carry out testing and examination of routine samples using a variety of instrumental or classical chemistry techniques, particularly ICP-MS, Ion Chromatography, X-Ray Fluorescence, Ion Selective Electrode and physical testing techniques.
- Ensure all work in their area is carried out in accordance with the department’s UKAS accredited quality system and within the Operating rules of the departments Safety Case.
- Develop current and new Analytical Methods, keeping abreast of new theories and analytical instrumentation.
- Provide Validation and Accreditation reports for submission to UKAS.
- Manage laboratory activities to meet customer lead-times/expectations.
- Maintain equipment and manage obsolescence.
- Review methods to ensure they fit for use
- Maintain safe working through the application of COSHH and risk assessment generation and review.
- Evaluate and interpret data and evaluate non-conformances.
- Able to write and access technical methods and journals.
- Lead the laboratory under audit conditions and regulator inspection.
- Ensure that work is carried out by the team in a safe and tidy manner, in accordance with good laboratory practice (GLP).
- Manage Leave and sickness absence to ensure customer requirements are met.
- Acts as intelligent customer for the company.
- Apply knowledge to other parts of the business by being involved in growth projects.
- Maintaining good housekeeping of the working areas.
Qualifications:
- Significant understanding of the analytical methods employed within the chemical laboratories
- Exceptional attention to detail and quality of work.
- High standards and expectations.
- Ability to lead a team while under pressure to deliver analytical results to customer.
- Develops staff in both technical and behavioural attributes to ensure continual improvement
- Excellent organisational skills to maintain analytical operations and meet customer lead-times/expectations.
- Strong leadership skills and able to communicate and guide in various formats to all levels within the company.
- Good technical and working knowledge of the laboratory instrumentation used.
- Ability to troubleshoot and investigate analytical anomalies.
- Has a strong questioning attitude and able to identify issues and weaknesses.
Essential Skills/Experience/Qualifications:
- Graduate (minimum 2:2) in a scientific discipline with minimum 2 years’ experience on an operating site.
- Or At least 10 years’ experience working in an analytical laboratory.
- Awareness of Health and Safety Legislation.
- Understanding of the ISO 17025 standard.
Advanced/Desirable Skills:
- Experience working in the nuclear sector or other hazardous chemical industries.
- Thorough understanding of the uranium conversion processes employed on the Springfields Site.
- Understanding of the link between analytical results and reactor/plant safety cases
- Ability to perform statistical analysis and method validation.
- In-depth knowledge of analytical instruments such as XRF, ISE, ICP-MS, Physical testing.
- Understanding of the Nuclear Quality Assurance Certification
