Introduction to the 50L Home Coalition

As cities face the growing risk of "Day Zero" scenarios, where water taps are shut off for all residents, innovative partnerships, policies, and approaches are urgently needed to protect this invaluable resource. In response, private sector leaders established the "50 Liter Home Coalition" to drive systems-level change in urban water management and address global water stress. The coalition envisions transforming building systems and communities towards a net-zero carbon future, where daily water consumption is reduced to 50L, while achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By implementing in-home circular water and heating innovations, cities can significantly decrease water and energy demand. The coalition empowers cities with tools, policy support, and collaboration to scale up transformative innovations and bring about systemic change.

The Coalition’s collaborative activities are focused on four main objectives:

  • Innovate: co-design solutions to address water and energy efficiency in the home and within wider urban systems
  • Implement: demonstrate technical feasibility through pilot homes, and inform a path to global scale through policy transformations
  • Educate: reshape urban citizens’ relationship with water to inspire and enable daily behavioral lifestyle changes
  • Advocate: advance policy, regulatory and industry framework changes to transform domestic use as well as water supply and treatment ecosystems.

Co-chaired by Procter & Gamble and the Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona, the 50L Home Coalition is convened by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
