We are looking for a curious and motivated Life Cycle Assessment Specialist to join our Climate and Sustainable Business Development team. Our team drives Valio’s climate and nature work. Valio is a global frontrunner in climate work in the dairy and food industry, and we have an ambitious goal: reach carbon-neural milk value chain by 2035. We develop and progress actions that decrease the carbon footprint and improve the biodiversity in the milk value chain. We commercialize the climate positive actions with our value chain partners through the Carbo® Partnership Program. Our team promotes manure-based biogas production business by supporting Suomen Lantakaasu Oy (joint venture of Valio and St1 Biokraft). We have developed Carbo® Environment Calculator to evaluate environmental impacts and it is used in 90% of Finnish dairy and beef farms.


This is your chance to start your career in sustainability and grow into an expert in life cycle assessment and environmental modelling. In this role you will perform life cycle impact assessments by calculations and modelling related to climate and nature work at Valio. You will participate in the research and development of new actions and support the implementation and commercialization of the selected actions. Your role will be vital in the development of cutting-edge digital tools with external partners and you will guide their work. You will be part of a larger team and you will learn from the best. Your daily work will be guided and supported by experienced top-notch expert in life cycle calculation and modelling and you will co-operate closely with climate action development experts and business development professionals. You will be collaborating closely with external research and development partners and with stakeholders across the milk value chain.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Using and developing Carbo® Environment Calculator tool
  • Performing life cycle assessments according to principles set in EU directives
  • Environmental impact analysis via calculations and building development ideas and proposals
  • Concepting, building and maintenance of calculation models and tools and AI- based tools. Guiding external service providers. Acting as a product owner for certain tools.
  • Engaging with organizations across the value chain for data collection, handling and assessing quality of data received and problem solving.
  • Development of data handling and information extraction methods.
  • Documentation and reporting of results and methods in a clear and understandable way. Building conclusions and recommendations.
  • Performing trainings of digital tools for internal and external stakeholders
  • Other tasks based on own interest and employer’s needs


To succeed in the role, you would need to have:

  • At least MSc. Degree in environmental assessment, management, chemistry or technology or life cycle assessment or similar.
  • Strong capability and interest in mathematical modelling and calculations.
  • Knowhow of and interest in life cycle assessments (LCA) and calculations
  • Experience from and understanding in farming and agriculture will be valued as an advantage
  • Data analysis and reporting capability and ability to draw conclusions and to make recommendations.
  • Ability to define/conceptualize tools and steer external vendors in tool development
  • Ability to work as an integral part of high performing team: co-operation and influencing skills, proactiveness, taking responsibility
  • Can-do-attitude with interest to perform routine like modelling, calculations and assessment work and ability to take tasks quickly
  • Resilience and ability to work under uncertainty
  • Curiosity and desire to learn new topics and skills
  • Good skills (oral and written) in English language


In addition, we value the following qualities:

  • Work experience in environment or life cycle assessments and calculations
  • Knowhow of and interest in coding (esp. Python)
  • Interest in business development and customer orientation mindset
  • Good skills (oral and written) in Finnish language
