Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
About Company
At Uravu Labs, we are dedicated to making human life more sustainable and communities more resilient. We believe in the need for breakthrough technologies in the water industry to create a sustainable future for everyone.
Our patent-pending and award-winning 100% renewable water technology uses atmospheric moisture and renewable energy to produce high-quality drinking water. Scalable to large quantities, our solution serves industries and communities in a decentralized and carbon-neutral way. We deliver impactful outcomes for water initiatives and aim to completely rethink how we experience water.
How We Started
Founded in 2019, Uravu Labs was born out of a shared vision to address water scarcity issues, particularly inspired by the founders' own experiences on the NIT Calicut campus during their studies. Driven by a passion for innovation and sustainability, Uravu Labs embarked on a mission to develop cutting-edge solutions that could extract water from the air using renewable energy sources. The company's journey began with the realization that existing methods were not entirely sustainable due to their heavy reliance on electricity and the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential.
Determined to make a difference, the founders set out to create a solution that would be truly renewable and sustainable, resulting in groundbreaking technology that harnesses renewable energy to produce clean water from the air.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with 5+ years of hands-on experience in product design and manufacturing to join Uravu Labs. You will work on designing and scaling our breakthrough atmospheric water generation (AWG) technology - liquid desiccant systems that extract drinking water from air using 100% renewable energy. This role requires someone who can independently own mechanical design tasks for thermal and fluid systems, work closely with our fabrication team, and drive designs from concept to production as we scale from pilot units to high-volume manufacturing
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Development
- Design and develop mechanical systems for atmospheric water generation equipment including absorbers, desorbers, heat exchangers, and fluid handling systems
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing-ready drawings for thermal systems, pressure vessels, and process equipment
- Design sheet metal assemblies, piping systems, and structural frameworks for larger capacity AWG systems
- Support scale-up from prototype units to standardized, modular production systems
Manufacturing & Fabrication Collaboration
- Work closely with in-house teams and external vendors to validate designs for manufacturability
- Collaborate on metal fabrication, machining, welding, sheet metal work, and fluid system assembly
- Ensure designs meet food-grade safety standards (FSSAI compliance) and material compatibility requirements
- Optimize designs for cost, performance, manufacturability, and ease of assembly
Prototyping & Testing
- Support rapid prototyping, design iterations, and performance testing of thermal and fluid systems
- Participate in leak testing, thermal performance validation, and system commissioning
- Improve existing designs based on field testing feedback and production learnings
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with thermal engineers, automation engineers, and production teams for system integration
- Collaborate with supply chain and procurement teams on component selection and vendor coordination
- Support project timelines, BOMs, and design documentation for manufacturing handover
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelors or Masters in Mechanical Engineering
- 3–6 years of experience in mechanical design and product development
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (primary CAD tool at Uravu)
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes: machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, piping, assembly
- Ability to create and interpret detailed engineering drawings with GD&T
- Experience designing components and assemblies for production
- Knowledge of tolerance analysis, DFM (Design for Manufacturing), and design optimization
Good to Have (Strongly Preferred)
- Experience with thermal systems, heat exchangers, HVAC, refrigeration, or process equipment
- Exposure to fluid systems, pressure vessels, or pharma/food-grade equipment design
- Background in manufacturing or hardware product companies
- Experience working with fabrication vendors and shop-floor teams
- Ability to manage multiple design tasks independently in fast-paced environments
- Exposure to renewable energy, climate tech, or water tech systems
Current Projects You'll Work On
- Scaling 2k LPD and 10k LPD atmospheric water generation systems
- Data center waste heat integration projects
- Continuous production system design for commercial deployment
Why Join Uravu!!
- Work on 100% renewable water technology.
- Be part of a fast-growing climate tech startup.
- Own end-to-end mechanical design.
- Build decentralized, carbon-neutral water systems.
