Senior Environmental Sustainability Engineer, Supply Chain (San Francisco)
Overview
Senior Environmental Sustainability Engineer, Supply Chain URA. This US Hybrid (3 days per week) role is based in San Francisco, California. You will be the first dedicated hire for supply chain sustainability, with the opportunity to build and lead this critical function from the ground up. You will identify, develop, and implement strategies to drastically reduce the ecological footprint, drive resource efficiency, and ensure responsible practices from component sourcing through end-of-life, championing adoption both internally and externally.
You will work cross-functionally with R&D, Product, Manufacturing Engineering, Logistics, Customer Experience, and Legal, as well as external manufacturing and logistics partners, to achieve ambitious sustainability targets. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, project management, and a passion for environmental stewardship to build a more sustainable future for URA and the planet.
What you will do
- Pioneer URA's Supply Chain Sustainability Program: design, implement, and lead the environmental sustainability strategy across the entire supply chain and product lifecycle; align with corporate goals and drive adoption internally and with partners.
- Logistics & Freight Optimization: partner with logistics to reduce the carbon footprint of inbound and outbound logistics and freight; explore modes like ocean freight optimization, sustainable fuels, and route efficiencies.
- Circular Economy & Waste Management:
- Customer Returns & E-waste: develop and manage programs for responsible handling of customer returns, refurbishment, and end-of-life management, including e-waste recycling and circularity initiatives; establish new processes for the company.
- Manufacturing & Assembly Waste: drive programs to minimize waste in manufacturing and assembly at Contract Manufacturers (CMs), promoting recycling and waste-to-resource solutions.
- Manufacturing Energy Efficiency: collaborate with CMs to improve energy efficiency, identify opportunities for renewable energy adoption and reduced consumption related to URA's production.
- Sustainable Components & Materials: partner with R&D and engineering to evaluate and integrate more sustainable materials and components into products and packaging, considering lifecycle impacts.
- Carbon Footprint Measurement & Reduction: establish methodologies for measuring manufacturing and supply chain carbon footprint (Scope 3), identify reduction levers, and track progress against targets.
- Carbon Credits & Offsetting: evaluate and manage carbon offsetting strategies and carbon credit programs as part of URA's climate action plan.
- Supplier Engagement & Auditing: work with suppliers and CMs to assess environmental performance, develop improvement plans, and ensure compliance with sustainability standards and regulations, driving adoption of sustainable practices.
- Regulatory Compliance & Reporting: stay informed of evolving environmental regulations (e.g., EPR, RoHS, REACH) and industry best practices; ensure compliance and support reporting requirements.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication: act as the primary subject matter expert for environmental sustainability, champion its importance, educate internal teams, foster a sustainability mindset, and communicate progress to internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in environmental sustainability, manufacturing operations, or supply chain, with a proven focus on implementing sustainability initiatives in hardware or consumer electronics
- Experience building and leading new programs or functions in sustainability
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for consumer products (electronics assembly, injection molding, metal fabrication)
- Proven expertise with carbon footprint accounting and reduction strategies (GHG Protocol, Scope 1-3), including carbon credits or offsetting
- Proven expertise in waste management, including e-waste and circular economy concepts
- Experience in sustainable logistics and freight optimization; familiarity with transportation modes and environmental impacts
- Knowledge of sustainable materials science and evaluating environmental impact of components and materials
- Familiarity with manufacturing energy efficiency opportunities and renewable energy integration
- Understanding of environmental regulations (e.g., EPR, WEEE, RoHS, REACH) and industry certifications
- Excellent project management skills for leading complex initiatives with multiple stakeholders
- Strong analytical skills to interpret data and drive decisions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence and collaborate across diverse teams
- Pioneering spirit, passion for environmental sustainability, and proactive problem-solving mindset
- Willingness to travel internationally as needed (up to 30% for supplier engagement and factory visits)
