We are now looking for a Director, Legal Counsel, Uruguay and wider Latin America to join our team in Montevideo.

What You Will Do

In this role, you will lead UPM’s legal team in Uruguay and, together with your team, contribute to the success of our UPM Fibres business. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving legal policies, practices, and ways of working that support business objectives, while ensuring alignment with current and long-term business strategies.

As Director, Legal Counsel, you will work in close partnership with business leaders and key stakeholders across the organization, building effective legal support models for UPM businesses throughout the Latin America region. Together with your team, you will play a critical role in enabling business growth, managing legal risks, and driving value through proactive and solution-oriented legal counsel.

Success in this position requires a combination of strong legal expertise, sound business acumen, and the ability to build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders effectively across diverse environments. You will be a visible character at all locations of UPM Fibres business operations in Uruguay (pulp mills, forestry, logistics).

In This Position, You Will

  • Lead and develop the legal team in Uruguay, fostering a high-performance and collaborative culture
  • Provide legal advice to support business objectives and decision-making.
  • Develop and implement legal policies, processes, and governance practices aligned with UPM’s strategic priorities
  • Participate and contribute to the work Fibres Uruguay operations management team
  • Partner closely with business leaders and stakeholders to support business growth and transformation in Uruguay and Latin America
  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks while enabling commercially sound solutions.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and represent the legal function in key business initiatives in Latin America
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and UPM policies across the region

Who You Are

  • You have a master’s degree in law and minimum of 15 years of legal work experience of demanding business law (projects, transactions, contracts, governance, regulatory, dispute resolution), ideally as an in-house counsel or at a law firm dealing with international matters
  • You are business-minded, possess good interpersonal skills, are flexible and able to work both independently and as a team member on a range of assignments in a cross-cultural environment
  • Experience in management team collaboration within an international organization
  • You have strong peopleleadership skills, and you enjoy supporting your team members’ success
  • You are solution-oriented and comfortable voicing your recommendations in a changing business environment
  • You are highly motivated and enjoy working with diverse people in a global environment
  • You have excellent communication skills and are fluent in written and spoken Spanish and English

Additional Information About The Position

Frequent travel within Uruguay is required, as well as a willingness and readiness to travel across Latin America.

The position holder will report to Group Legal Counsel.
