We are now looking for a Director, Marketing, Sustainability & Communications, Fibres Finland Operations, to join our team at UPM Fibres. You will be a member of the global Marketing, Sustainability and Communications (MSC) function and lead the Finland-based MSC team in our Fibres Finland Operations. This position is based in Helsinki, Finland.

In this role, you will lead the Marketing, Sustainability & Communications function and a great team of marketing and communications colleagues in our Fibres Finland Operations. This is a unique position within UPM as it covers such a varied and broad range of responsibilities, ensuring that every day is different and that you get to work daily with a diverse, inspiring and highly professional group of colleagues and external stakeholders. What You Will Do

You will lead the MSC function and team within Fibres Finland Operations, ensuring that our strategy and plans align with UPM’s business priorities.

Fibres Finland Operations include the UPM Pulp operations in Finland (three pulp mills), as well as our UPM Forest and UPM Timber businesses – giving you a broad and dynamic scope. You will lead marketing and communications to forest owners, public affairs and stakeholder engagement on forestry topics, media relations, crisis communications, mill communications, and marketing for our sawn timber business.

This strategic leadership role requires strong expertise in Finnish forestry topics, excellent stakeholder management skills, a solid communications background and business acumen. Experience in marketing is an advantage. Collaboration across businesses, teams and functions is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Communications and marketing

  • Lead internal and external communications for UPM Forest, UPM Timber and our pulp mill operations in Finland. Drive marketing for UPM Forest and UPM Timber.
  • Strengthen UPM’s image and brand among forest owners and key stakeholders.
  • Manage crisis response and communications.

Forest policy and public affairs

  • Advocate for UPM’s interests on forestry-related topics in Finland.
  • Monitor and address issues affecting UPM Fibres’ operating environment, including civil society concerns.
  • Build and maintain relationships with governmental and industry stakeholders.
  • Represent UPM in Finnish associations and forums relevant to forestry.

Stakeholder management

  • Proactively protect and enhance our reputation and license to operate, especially with NGOs, civil society, media and policymakers.
  • Focus on sustainability and forestry-related stakeholder relations, working closely with the environmental and social sustainability teams at Group and business levels.

Leadership and team management

  • Develop and implement the MSC strategy and plans for Fibres Finland Operations.
  • Serve as a member of the Fibres Finland Operations management team.
  • Lead a team of nine marketing and communications professionals.

Who You Are

  • You have a relevant university level degree and +10 years of relevant experience.
  • You have the proven capability to understand business objectives and translate them into impactful stakeholder management, communications and marketing strategies and plans.
  • You have a strong understanding of Finnish forestry and sustainability topics and an existing network of key stakeholders in this area.
  • You collaborate seamlessly in cross-functional setups and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • You have proven leadership skills and team management experience and are an inspiring and strong team leader.
  • You have the gravitas and seniority to advise and interact with senior executives at UPM as well as to represent UPM towards senior external stakeholders.
  • You have native-level written and spoken Finnish language skills and are fluent in English.
  • You are proactive, curious, innovative and solution focused. You manage pressure effectively and know how to set priorities.
