FD Operational Sustainability within Facilities Development is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Sustainable Buildings Specialist.
The primary purpose of this position is to apply expert green building technical knowledge across all building development projects to deliver innovative, sustainable, resilient solutions that support institutional priorities and enable long-term operational excellence.
The Specialist provides green building consulting services to major capital projects to achieve certification targets, and advance climate action, eco-health, and responsible consumption. Where knowledge gaps exist, the Specialist initiates and leads studies to address them. They integrate sustainability into the overall culture of the Facilities teams using advanced communication and engagement skills.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Technical Work (50%)
- Green Building Services: Deliver sustainability services for major capital projects, including facilitating sustainable design charrettes; ensuring alignment with sustainability goals; managing LEED and other certification processes; and developing supporting project procedures and design standards.
- Standards: Develop and improve standards to ensure capital projects align with the ISS throughout design, construction, and operations.
- Process Improvement: Develop standard operating procedures and enhance existing processes - such as those within the project management office - to integrate sustainability considerations.
- Gap Identification: Identify internal and external resources and expertise needed to support project and portfolio sustainability goals.
- Project Advising: Provide sustainability guidance for medium and small projects and ongoing operations and maintenance.
- Research: Stay current on policies, standards, and best practices that inform campus sustainability initiatives.
- Tours and Presentations: Deliver tours, lectures, and class presentations to advance campus sustainability literacy.
- Knowledge Sharing: Develop and deliver stories, reports, and presentations that communicate progress and lessons learned.
- Education: Build the sustainability proficiency of internal staff in design, construction, and operations, with emphasis on current research and best practices.
- Campus as a Learning Lab: Support learning lab projects and provide mentorship to technical student interns.
- Contract Management: Develop proposals and procurement documents; evaluate bids; and work with selected proponents to achieve project goals and contractual obligations.
- Cost Recovery: Define green building service offerings, including scope of work and fee schedules, and ensure timely invoicing.
- Planning: Contribute to strategic planning and action plan development.
- Grant Applications: Develop business cases and write grant applications to support sustainability initiatives in the built environment.
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science, or Architecture required; a graduate degree is preferred.
- Relevant professional designation in engineering or architecture, or eligibility for immediate registration, is required.
- LEED AP BD+C accreditation is required; additional LEED AP or other sustainability related credentials are desirable.
- Six to eight years of experience leading sustainable building initiatives, with broad experience across design, construction, operations, and sustainable site design, is required.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse stakeholders across multiple building types; leading sustainability goal setting charrettes; building partnerships; and supporting change management is required.
- Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects at various stages and meet milestones and deadlines.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with staff and faculty at all levels.
