FD Operational Sustainability within Facilities Development is currently seeking a Full-time Regular EMIS Administrator.

The Operational Sustainability unit plays a critical role ensuring all University owned buildings and systems are designed and operated to provide safe, reliable, and efficient spaces to conduct research and learning, in alignment with the institutional strategy Ahead of Tomorrow and climate action goals. A central component of this effort is the Energy Management Information System (EMIS), an integrated network of sensors, meters, servers, databases, software applications, and communication infrastructure that provides real time operational and building performance data. Facilities teams rely on this data to make informed decisions that affect daily operations and long-term planning.

The EMIS Administrator works in a technically complex environment that spans building automation systems, IT networks, and data analytics platforms. The role requires continuous learning, strong analytical skills, and the ability to troubleshoot issues across hardware, software, networking, and data integration layers. Workload peaks may occur during system upgrades, commissioning of new equipment, major maintenance events, or when responding to unexpected outages or data anomalies. The position requires calm decision making, sound judgment, and effective communication, particularly when addressing time sensitive or high impact issues.

The normal work schedule is a 35-hour week, Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime during peak periods or critical incidents. While primarily office based, the role may require visits to mechanical rooms, rooftops, or other building spaces to verify equipment, support troubleshooting. The position reports to the Energy Manager and is part of the AUPE Bargaining Unit.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the system administrator for the University's Energy Management Information System (EMIS). This includes ensuring that all EMIS servers, databases, applications, and data analytics tools are operational, secure, accurate, and optimized for performance. The EMIS Administrator is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the analytics platform, programming the integration of new data points, particularly metering, and developing system functionality so users can fully leverage the tool for operational and strategic decision making. The EMIS Administrator also helps the BMS technicians as needed.

The position works closely with BMS technicians, IT teams, external vendors, and internal stakeholders to resolve technological issues, improve system reliability, and expand the EMIS's capabilities. Key areas of focus include installation, configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement of EMIS related hardware, software, networking components, and analytics tools.

In addition, the EMIS Specialist establishes technical standards, documentation, and procedures for the EMIS, ensuring consistent practices across internal staff and contractors. Through this work, the position plays a central role in supporting energy efficiency, operational excellence, and the University's broader sustainability objectives.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Technical Work (80%)

  • Make the Skyspark integration an accurate representation of the current EMIS, sort and tag relevant points using the Haystack standard, maintain the database. Add/remove data points as needed.
  • Program views in Skyspark that enable the campus community to report meaningful information and operate buildings efficiently.
  • Perform basic maintenance of SQL databases.
  • Work with technical support to resolve issues arising with the various EMIS components including lighting controls, metering enterprise system, and various other building technologies.
  • Work with the Data Analyst and BMS technicians to ensure metering data in Skyspark is complete and accurate.
  • Ensure all servers and software parts of the EMIS are accessible, up to date, and stable.
  • Assist BMS technologists with troubleshooting networking, server, software issues and communicating with IT to achieve an optimal network deployment (fast, safe, reliable).
  • Assist BMS technologists with system maintenance tasks as required.

Administrative Work (20%)

  • Manage EMIS licensing.
  • Plan and perform upgrades related to the EMIS system.
  • Manage user accounts.
  • Assist the Energy Manager in the development of short and long-term EMIS deployment plans.
  • Optimize and document processes related to the EMIS including the maintenance and recovery of the system.
  • Assist the Energy Manager with other EMIS related administrative tasks as needed.

Other

  • Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisor, and members of the University community, consultants, contractors and suppliers.
  • Ensure regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
  • Manage own time effectively to accomplish tasks with minimum of overtime.
  • Ensures that equipment, workspace, tools and systems supplied by the University are used for the purposes supplied, are maintained in good order and that costs of use are controlled.
  • Meet all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation as required; ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.
  • Is familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducts himself/herself according to these Principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Software, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree with 3+ year of work experience.
  • Will consider Engineering Technologist Diploma preferably in mechanical, instrumentation, software engineering with 7+ years of work experience.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to analyze data and information, to recognize and solve problems, and to formulate and document plans.
  • Experience with Skyspark building analytics and fault detection software is a strong asset.
  • Experience with data analytics and process improvement is a strong asset.
  • Experience including work on commercial building automation systems and involving IT work such as database management, programming, network troubleshooting is an asset.
  • Skilled communicator, with the ability to deal with colleagues at various levels of the organization, including senior management, suppliers, engineering firms, software and hardware suppliers, supporting trades and contractors.
  • Demonstrated interest in learning with a proven record of continuous upgrading of technical skills, especially on topics related to IT, energy management, building controls.
  • Working knowledge of Windows server operating systems is an asset.
  • Experience with network troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark is an asset.
  • AEE, LEED, IPMVP certification is an asset.
  • Must have good hearing and color vision and be able to perform physically demanding work.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license with less than 7 demerit (graduated and probationary licenses are not permitted).
