Asst. Prof. Chemistry UCalgary - Physical Electrochemistry for Energy Conversion/Storage
Description
The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is inviting applications for a full-time position in the Department of Chemistry, specializing in Physical Electrochemistry to address fundamental electrochemical phenomena underlying emerging energy conversion and storage technologies. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) in the Department of Chemistry, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027 or earlier.
Successful candidates: Successful candidates must hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related discipline, with research training in physical or analytical electrochemistry, and will establish an experimental research program built on the quantitative, mechanistic study of electrochemical systems. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: electrified interfaces and the electric double layer; interfacial electron- and proton-transfer kinetics; electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms; ion solvation and transport in liquid, polymer or solid-state electrolytes; interphase formation in energy-storage systems; operando and in situ spectroscopic, imaging, or scanning-probe study of working electrodes; single-entity and nanoscale electrochemical measurement; design of functional materials; and electrochemical separations and materials degradation, aging, and failure mechanisms. Theory, simulation and machine learning are welcome as complements to experiment.
This work may be situated in any energy conversion or storage context; in assessing applications, the committee will weigh the depth of physical-chemical insight and the significance of the scientific questions underpinning the candidate's research program more heavily than the specific application or device.
The successful candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program of international standing, and will contribute to undergraduate teaching across the chemistry curriculum. The position is supported by shared laboratory space configured for instrument-based research; candidates should propose programs realizable principally through electroanalytical instrumentation, spectroscopy, microscopy or computation rather than large-scale preparative synthesis, and should address instrumentation and space needs in the budget outline requested below.
Interdisciplinary collaboration and experience working with industry or government partners will be considered assets.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in physical electrochemistry AND/OR a strong record in alternative, non-traditional outputs such as (but not limited to): community outreach (popular press, interviews, public or online seminars, etc.), resource development (online databases, protocols, etc.), and scientific service related to physical electrochemistry. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching. Candidates must showcase a clear dedication to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.
The University of Calgary adheres to the principles of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and strives to evaluate research impact responsibly and inclusively by explicitly considering discipline-appropriate methods for demonstrating the quality, significance, and societal impact of a broad range of research contributions.
Application deadline is November 16, 2026.
