Key Responsibilities

  • Work with key partners and stakeholders to provide technical and administrative support to the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of assigned project components.
  • Monitor and analyze specific aspects of project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues and recommend corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties; and identify and track follow-up actions.
  • Assist in defining and establishing synergies and cooperation in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UNEP Medium-Term Strategy (MTS), and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • Connect assigned activities with related initiatives across thematic areas, working closely with relevant thematic units and the wider UNEP network.
  • Support the development of initiatives and project ideas, including targeted resource mobilization, addressing both horizontal and vertical funding opportunities.
  • Conduct basic research on selected thematic aspects related to mountain ecosystems and climate change, including collecting, analyzing, and presenting statistical data and information from diverse sources.
  • Provide substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging development issues and trends in ecosystem degradation, wildlife conservation, biodiversity loss, and climate change in tropical mountain ecosystems.
  • Assist in performing consulting assignments in collaboration with partners, including planning and facilitating workshops and other interactive sessions, and supporting the development of action plans for managing change.
  • Contribute to the preparation of written outputs, such as draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications related to mountain ecosystems.
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to consultative meetings, conferences, and workshops, including proposing agenda items, identifying participants, preparing background documents and presentations, and handling logistical arrangements.
  • Undertake outreach activities related to the Global Mountains Programme and assigned project components, including contributing to training workshops and seminars and delivering presentations on assigned topics.
  • Participate in field missions, including providing substantive and administrative support and contributing to data collection activities.
  • Coordinate activities related to budgeting and funding, including project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, and the preparation of related programme and project documentation.
  • Contribute to the collection and analysis of data, identification of trends or patterns, and preparation of draft insights using data visualization tools such as graphs, charts, tables, and analytical reports to support data-driven planning, decision-making, and reporting.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent or higher) in a field relevant to tropical mountain ecosystems, ecosystem management and restoration, biodiversity and wildlife conservation, climate change adaptation or nature-based solutions, environmental sciences, sustainable development, or a related discipline is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in project management, including experience in biodiversity conservation and ecosystem-based adaptation or nature-based solutions, is required.
  • Working experience in sustainable mountain development, including experience in the (tropical) Andes, is required.
  • Working experience in wildlife conservation involving large carnivores in the Andes, such as the jaguar or spectacled bear, is required.
  • Experience in policy and strategy development at the national or regional level and prior experience working with international organizations is desirable.
  • Experience in developing tools, methodologies, and guidance—preferably related to climate change adaptation and wildlife conservation—is desirable.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable (not required for successful YPP or P-1 candidates with a relevant degree).

Language Requirements

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English and Spanish is required.
