State & Local Government Market Development Intern (Remote)
How You’ll Make An Impact
As a State & Local Government Market Development Intern, you will contribute directly to the work of the U.S. Market Transformation and Development (U.S. MTD) team by supporting real projects that impact our organization and mission. You will report to the VP, State and Local Government and collaborate with team members across US MTD, Advocacy and Client Solutions.
During this internship, you will focus on the following question: How can U.S. MTD advance green building and sustainable community development across the state and local government sectors?

Location: This position is remote in the United States.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM in the intern’s time zone. Note: Interns are not compensated for holidays or personal time off.
Hiring Process
Compensation: Hourly rate: $20–$25 per hour, based on education and experience. Compensation is determined using an internal intern pay matrix and is not negotiable.

By the end of the internship, you are expected to deliver:
- A market analysis of state and local government product uptake and growth potential.
- An article posted to USGBC.org.
- A final presentation for the Intern Showcase.
- Identify and analyze state and local government projects aligned with USGBC’s product ecosystem, including LEED, LEED for Cities, SITES, and TRUE.
- Assess how rating system adoption and best practices intersect with the advancement of green building policies.
- Survey state and local government members to understand professional development, membership, and education needs and outline potential future offerings for the sector.
- Conduct client and stakeholder research to support engagement strategies; contribute to developing and updating account plans for priority state and local government partners.
- Produce targeted pitch decks, reference materials, and talking points to support staff working with public sector partners in markets across the United States; tailor materials to priority regions, policy contexts, and strategic opportunities.
- Provide insights and recommendations to expand adoption of green building practices and deepen public sector engagement.
- Explore how LEED for Cities certification can strengthen long-term relationships with government leaders and drive sustained sustainability action.
- Maintain accurate records of weekly hours worked.
- Prepare and deliver a final project/research presentation.
Experience (if applicable)
- Previous internship, work study, or volunteer experience.
- Demonstrated passion for urban sustainability, climate action, green building, and community resilience.
- Interest in government, public sector engagement, or civic leadership.
- Experience conducting market research or survey-based analysis.
- Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills; excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to balance multiple tasks and manage deadlines effectively.
- Commitment to USGBC’s mission and values.
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. higher education institution.
- Academic focus in urban planning, geography, sustainability, public policy, business or public administration, marketing and communications, environmental studies, or related fields.
- Familiarity with:
- Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Comfort with virtual collaboration platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
