About The Team

In our Environment Group, we have three teams that work together to ensure we care for the environment while delivering on our strategic priorities and commitments to New Zealand. They are:


  • Environmental Projects – who manage major capital projects, customer projects, and listed Transpower build projects
  • Environmental Operations – who support the “build” phase and our programme of allocated base capex projects ($170M per annum) and maintenance delivery
  • Environmental Systems and Strategies – who manage our environmental screening tools and provide support to the operations and projects team on process, systems and data analysis


Together, we are committed to minimising impacts on land, water, ecology and archaeology, while enabling essential grid infrastructure.

About The Opportunity - In Wellington Or Christchurch

After 14 years at Transpower, our Environmental Operations Team Leader has taken the next step in her career within the sector. This is your opportunity to take on a hands-on leadership role in our specialist team at the frontline of environmental and planning performance for Transpower’s operational and maintenance work.

You’ll lead a team of four environmental and planning specialists, working closely with field delivery, construction, and project teams. Your focus will be on embedding strong planning and consenting practice into operational delivery, lifting capability, and providing trusted advice, particularly in the build phase of our complex, high-risk projects.

You’ll combine leadership, RMA planning expertise, and practical delivery insight to help ensure environmental risks are identified early, well managed, and translated into workable outcomes on the ground. Moving from compliance to performance, you’ll increase the throughput of project delivery to ensure our assets our well maintained. This includes educating service providers at their offices, so you’ll enjoy facilitation. With no two days the same, you’ll:


  • Lead planning and consenting across operational, maintenance, and base capex works, including oversight of resource consents, designations, conditions, and other statutory requirements.
  • Influence construction methodologies and on-site field practices to improve environmental outcomes and reduce regulatory risk.
  • Embed our environmental screening tool as part of the team’s risk-based decision-making.
  • Coach and develop a high-performing team while building environmental and planning capability across the wider delivery community.
  • Build strong working relationships with Transpower Grid Delivery project teams, councils, iwi, service providers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide trusted environmental planning advice to support delivery across complex, high-risk projects.


This role combines leadership, technical expertise, and practical delivery insight, ensuring environmental risks are identified early and translated into workable solutions for Transpower.

What will you bring?

We’re looking for a collaborative and pragmatic people leader with strong environmental planning and consenting expertise, sound judgement, and the ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical delivery outcomes.

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:


  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Leadership experience in RMA planning, environmental management or consenting within infrastructure, utilities, construction, or another regulated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand planning and consenting frameworks, including the Resource Management Act.
  • Proven experience securing and implementing resource consents and designations, including managing site conditions during delivery.
  • Confidence working with operational or construction teams in complex, high-risk environments, and balancing environmental, regulatory, safety, cost and programme considerations.


Experience with linear infrastructure, critical assets, or build-phase environmental support would be an advantage.
