In this role, you’ll champion environmental improvement across Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Driving the delivery and continuous improvement of the Operations Environment Plan (OEP).
- Manage individual projects within the work streams outlined in the OEP.
- Working closely with operational teams, and identifying practical ways to improve environmental performance.
- Using real data to influence decisions and support colleagues to act on insights.
- Engaging with stakeholders and proactively contribute expertise and ideas via directorate environmental forums and regular meetings across Operations to unblock barriers, align activity, and build momentum and visibility, including primarily in head offices with some site visits.
- Creating clear, actionable guidance to help operational colleagues understand environmental expectations, risks, and opportunities.
- Supporting governance and reporting to senior leadership, showcasing progress and impact.
- Work closely with Safety Health & Environment (SHE) Sustainability and corporate Environment (S&CE) Team to ensure proper access to the correct expert advisory support for operational teams.
- Support in upskilling the business to enable implementation of the OEP.
- Carry out site visits and audits to promote environmental compliance and best practice.
- 4–5 years of recent experience in environmental delivery within an operational, construction, engineering, transport, or logistics setting (Essential)
- Some knowledge of environmental improvement interventions in one or more of the following: climate adaptation, habitat and biodiversity enhancement, green infrastructure, or circular economy approaches (Desirable).
- Some understanding of the role of maintenance, operational planning, operationa readiness and capital portfolio management within the overall delivery of an asset lifecycle (Desirable).
- Knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory structures (Desirable)
- Experience with ISO 14001 or similar environmental management systems (Desirable)
- Professional membership (e.g. ISEP, IES, CIWEM) is beneficial.
- Strong influencing skills: able to translate environmental improvements into operational and business benefits.
- Excellent relationship‑building across all levels — from frontline colleagues to leadership teams.
- Confident communicator with good presentation development and delivery capabilities, and able to present confidently to senior stakeholders. Able to articulate problems and solutions clearly.
- Able to collaborate across multi‑disciplinary teams and drive delivery in a large-scale, complex operational environment.
- A proactive, pragmatic problem‑solver who takes initiative and gets things done.
- Able to identify and communicate risks and propose interventions to ensure workstreams are delivered on time and with intended outcomes.
- Experience of managing and influencing stakeholders in an operational, engineering, construction, transport, or logistics environment (Desirable)
- Demonstrable experience in environmental or sustainability management, including one or more from circular economy, climate adaptation, green infrastructure, or habitat and biodiversity enhancement projects or programmes (Essential)
- Managing personal projects within multiple workstreams and adapting to changing priorities, ideally in a sustainability or environmental management setting (Desirable)
- Applying environmental management and/or improvement practices directly within operational, engineering, construction, transport, or logistics environments. (Essential)
- Working closely with frontline teams, supervisors, and operational managers to influence decision‑making and embed environmental best practice. (Essential)
- Translating environmental requirements into practical, workable solutions that fit operational realities. (Desirable)
- Using environmental performance data to identify improvements, support behaviour change, and inform operational planning. (Desirable)
- Building strong relationships across varied operational teams and successfully supporting environmental delivery at scale. (Desirable)
