Title: Corporate Energy Manager

Reporting: Senior Director of Technology

Location: Roanoke, VA

Position Overview:

The Corporate Energy Manager will manage and improve energy strategy across all cement manufacturing facilities within the organization. This role is responsible for enterprise-wide energy procurement, optimization, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement of energy systems. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in cement process energy systems, wholesale electricity markets (preferably PJM), utility rate structures, and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems, and will drive strategic initiatives to reduce energy intensity and improve operational performance across the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Energy Management
  • Manage and improve a corporate-wide energy strategy aligned with operational, financial, and sustainability goals.
  • Lead cross-functional energy initiatives company-wide to enhance thermal efficiency and reduce energy costs.
  • Energy Procurement & Budget Oversight
  • Manage enterprise-level procurement of electricity and natural gas, including contract negotiation and supplier management in close collaboration with TA’s procurement function.
  • Support wholesale electricity procurement efforts, with preference for experience in PJM market operations and settlements.
  • Oversee and optimize energy spend of tens of millions of dollars annually across all facilities.
  • Monitor energy markets and utility tariffs to inform purchasing decisions and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Thermal and Electrical Energy Optimization
  • Guide plant teams in applying calculations to predict and model energy usage.
  • Provide strategy to systematically improve plant performance as measured in KPI’s.
  • Identify and implement best practices for thermal & electrical energy efficiency in cement production processes.
  • Champion alternative energy sourcing and development.
  • Utility & Regulatory Engagement
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulated electric utilities for rate creation, tariff negotiation, and infrastructure planning either directly or through industry associations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local energy regulations across all operating regions.
  • Demand Management & Response
  • Develop and oversee corporate demand response programs to reduce peak load charges.
  • Implement demand-side management strategies across facilities to optimize energy use and reduce costs.
  • Manage 5 CP (Critical Peak Pricing) strategies across applicable markets.
  • ISO 50001 Energy Management System
  • Oversee the maintenance and continuous improvement of ISO 50001-certified Energy Management Systems across all plants.
  • Lead internal audits, performance reviews, and corporate-level reporting on energy performance and cost reduction efforts.
  • Leadership & Collaboration
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to plant-level energy teams.
  • Collaborate with operations, finance, sustainability, and compliance departments to align energy initiatives with business objectives.
  • Train and mentor staff on energy awareness, regulatory compliance, and best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Energy Management, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in cement manufacturing, with a strong focus on thermal energy systems.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with regulated electric utilities, including rate creation and negotiation.
  • Proven experience in natural gas procurement and contract management.
  • Demonstrated experience in wholesale electricity procurement, with preference for PJM market expertise.
  • Strong understanding of combustion calculations and energy modeling.
  • Experience with demand response and demand-side management programs.
  • Familiarity with 5 CP (Critical Peak Pricing) management strategies.
  • Demonstrated success in overseeing ISO 50001-certified Energy Management Systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of state, local, and federal energy regulations.
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Professional certifications such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager), CEP (Certified Energy Procurement), or equivalent.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership abilities.
  • Experience with energy management software and enterprise data analytics platforms.
