We have a new opportunity for a passionate conservationist to lead on the delivery of reserve management plans across North Essex.

As the Senior Ranger at Essex Wildlife Trust, the post-holder will be responsible for leading and coordinating the practical implementation of conservation land management action plans and related infrastructure maintenance works across our nature reserves and discovery parks in North Essex (area above the A14).

The post holder will work closely with the South Essex Senior Ranger and Reserve Managers to plan and deliver the wider deployment of staff teams for larger reserves’ projects across the County. The post will line manage two Area Rangers, and with them, will coordinate and direct the practical work of our reserves staff, Volunteer Wardens and their work parties, providing mentoring in conservation land management techniques, overseeing the quality of the work, and ensuring the teams are properly equipped for the tasks in hand.

Reporting to the North Essex Reserves Manager, the post holder will provide up-to-date site condition assessments, vehicle, equipment and materials status reports, and regularly reviewing site management/action plans to enable work to be prioritised for the most appropriate period within the current and future annual work schemes.

This role is well suited to applicants with significant practical land management experience together with a relevant degree in nature conservation, ecology, environmental science and/or equivalent. It is essential that applicants have excellent people management skills (including volunteers) and financial acumen skills, as is good knowledge of UK terrestrial, woodland, freshwater and coastal habitats and a range of habitat conservation issues.

This role is a permanent full-time position with a starting salary of £31,500 per annum. Essex Wildlife Trust is currently trialling hybrid-working arrangements with a view to implementing a workplace policy in 2023. Further details of the hybrid-working arrangements will be shared at interview. The role will require travelling to our reserves and nature discovery parks across Essex.
