We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Nature Reserves & Natural Capital to join our Conversation Team to lead on Essex’s nature recovery and a Wilder Essex at Essex Wildlife Trust.

We are looking for a driven and passionate conservationist to lead on the protection and management of the Trust’s landholdings to ensure the favourable condition of their constituent habitats and species, and ensure that the overall reserves management programme is evidence-led and responsive to the changing environment. Sustainability and climate resilience measures in reserves management will be key drivers for the work of the Head of Nature Reserves & Natural Capital.

As the Head of Nature Reserves & Natural Capital, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental and statutory land management regulations and any legal agreements relating to the reserves. The role will be responsible for maintaining a gazetteer of reserves to enable swift retrieval of statistical and site information. Working closely with the Director of Conservation and section heads in the data gathering effort for the Trust’s Natural Capital Assessment and help to build comprehensive habitat extent and species abundance databases for each reserve.

This role is well suited to applicants with excellent people management skills as is experience in practical land management experience of wildlife conservation operations, including grazing, on nature reserves in the UK. Demonstrable knowledge is essential of nature conservation, environmental, agricultural and land management law, policy, regulations, statutory management requirements and compliance at international, national, regional, and county level.

This role is a permanent full-time position with a starting salary of £44,000 per annum. Essex Wildlife Trust is currently trialling hybrid-working arrangements with a view to implementing a workplace policy in 2023. Further details of the hybrid-working arrangements will be shared at interview. The role will require travelling to our reserves and nature discovery parks across Essex.
