The Opportunity
The Failure Modes of Engineering (FeME) Network is a global initiative reimagining engineering to better serve society. We work to create inclusive, resilient, and adaptable approaches that address climate change and biodiversity loss, amplifying the voices of women and underrepresented groups.
We are seeking an Earth Fellow to join Failure Mode 1: Education, focused on transforming engineering education to be more inclusive, interdisciplinary, and socially responsive. The Earth Fellow will grow and curate the FeME Tapestry, highlighting diverse global contributions to climate-conscious engineering. They will coordinate interdisciplinary summer student projects and develop school-based challenges to inspire underrepresented groups into engineering. They will also translate learning into accessible blogs, case studies, and reports to strengthen FeME’s advocacy and impact.
As an Earth Fellow, you will be joining a diverse, fun and dynamic team of researchers, students and staff all working together to address the global climate emergency. As part of the Earth Fellows programme, you will have access to co-working space, exciting networking and personal development opportunities and opportunities to contribute towards partnerships and solutions for climate change on a global scale.
Earth Fellows work on individual and team-based projects which contribute to the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Earth Initiative’s work on climate change research-led impact, innovation, engagement, and teaching.
This post will be appointed at Grade UE07, step 1 which is £41,064 per annum, pro rata (£22.50 per hour).
Earth Fellowships are only open to current postgraduate and PhD students at the University of Edinburgh based in the UK. Please do not apply if you are not a current University of Edinburgh student.

Launched in 2022, the Edinburgh Earth Initiative was established by the University’s Executive with a cross institutional remit to drive a step change in the University’s engagements with climate and sustainability challenges.
In 2024, a strategic review of Edinburgh Earth Initiative was completed and the results of that review, including a strategy for 2025-2030, were approved by the University Executive. The strategy states that the mission of EEI is to catalyse bold, globally significant transdisciplinary research, innovation and partnerships at the University in support of the Research & Innovation Strategy 2030 and Climate Strategy.

Your Skills And Attributes For Success
- Current University of Edinburgh PhD student in the ‘25/’26 academic year, and expecting to continue their studies into autumn 2026.
- Strong organisational and coordination skills to support delivery of student projects.
- Ability to communicate clearly with diverse groups (students, academics, community partners).
- Interest in inclusive and interdisciplinary approaches to engineering education.
- Experience of STEM education and /or Engineering outreach
- Confidence working with digital platforms for submission tracking, project tracking and knowledge management.
- Good writing and synthesis skills for summarising project outcomes and producing case studies.
- Creativity in presenting insights through visuals, stories, or digital media.
- Mentorship and facilitation skills to help guide and support student teams.
