The Systems Specialist will work as part of the External Affairs Systems & Process sub-team, part of the External Affairs Business Advancement team in Global External Affairs. The Systems Specialist will be a member of the Systems & Process sub-team which is responsible for application and user support and associated resources for External Affairs/Government Relations and Conservation staff across Global, Regional and Worldwide Office (WO) teams. They support relationship management and conservation systems users located in each country in which TNC works and aid in the enhancement of such systems and associated business processes. Support for these systems and processes helps to optimize The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) government relations work and overall organization collaboration and efficiency. As a member of External Affairs Business Advancement team, the Specialist will support diverse strategies that work to encourage and foster successful adoption of TNC relationship and conservation management applications to improve communications, pipeline and financial tracking, constituent reporting and generally support practices that advance TNC’s 2030 goals.


The Systems Specialist will work toward meeting strategic priorities by implementing tactics for approved plans and completing day-to-day tasks and activities. They review and enter conservation, public funding and policy details into The Nature Conservancy’s constituent database (Blackbaud CRM) and conservation management database (The Hub). The Specialist assists with the development, support, and enhancement of systems for External Affairs to optimize TNC’s government relationship management, public grants tracking efforts, and conservation management efforts. The Specialist will lead efforts that require data updates in the system and running constituent reports. They will provide coaching and systems support for current and potential TNC government relations users globally, assist with public grants tracking and pipeline reporting, assist with conservation data management, aid in trouble shooting issues and testing fixes, and identifying opportunities for improvement to the business process documentation, systems, and training. The Specialist will assist with critical functions that include oversight of data structures and quality assurance. They will contribute to communications development and delivery to External Affairs/Government Relations and Conservation staff across Global, Regional and WO teams.

They will be responsible for communicating with users to address questions, resolve issues, provide support for data entry and updates in the system, and encourage adoption. They will use their systems expertise to identify product or usability needs and suggest improvements, resolve problems and enhance the user experience. They may assist in defining systems requirements and testing solutions, with constituent reporting for relationship targets, and with tracking and reporting for potential and pending grants and policy initiatives.


  • Act independently on assigned tasks and exercise independent judgment based on analysis and experience.
  • Coordinate projects with several variables, work within a defined timeline and budget.
  • Does not supervise any staff, but may supervise interns, volunteers, and/or temporary staff.
  • Responsible for Tier 1 Blackbaud CRM end user support. (Tier 1 means this person will be the first contact for questions.)
  • Provides Hub end user support.
  • Responsible for data quality assurance.
  • Provide quality customer service to users.
  • Provide data entry support to users.
  • Assist with constituent, conservation, and financial reporting.
  • Assist with setup and maintenance of pending grants information in systems and consolidated reporting.
  • Assist with team systems administration.
  • Contribute to the development or updates of business processes, training materials and end user system instructional guides and assist with communicating changes and providing training to system users.
  • Provide input on best practices and enhancements to drive increased adoption and usage by government relations staff.
  • Refer difficult questions and unusual problems to supervisor.
  • Willing to do some travel and work flexible hours.
  • Able to work independently, working with supervisor as needed.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
  • Able to make day-to-day decisions within the scope of work assignments.


  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination;
  • Experience in business writing, editing, and proofreading;
  • Experience with client/customer service;
  • Experience with relational database management and reporting;
  • Experience generating reports and interpreting data;
  • Experience organizing time and managing diverse activities to meet deadlines; and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Experience working across teams and communicating with a wide range of people


  • Experience with Blackbaud CRM or other CRM system;
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Motivated, independent worker who can thrive in a decentralized organization with minimal oversight;
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing data to report on key metrics, success indicators;
  • Experience coordinating administrative processes;
  • Ability to learn new systems and processes;
  • Ability to analyze information for the purpose of coordinating and planning activities and solving problems;
  • Proficient in using existing technology for processing, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data;
  • Experience with public fundraising, public grants, and/or grants generally;
  • Ability to coordinate complex projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units and functions to achieve optimal results;
  • Effective working in a team environment; and
  • Experience facilitating informational sessions.
