WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Seasonal Land Steward performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. They maintain preserve areas and perform land and wildlife management activities. They supervise no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers. The Seasonal Land Steward conducts vegetation management and/or conducts species monitoring and may also manage livestock. The Seasonal Land Steward will assist in prescribed burn preparation and implementation as well as maintenance and operation of tools and equipment. They may work long hours independently in isolated settings while making day-to-day decisions as delegated by a supervisor. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU


This is a 6-month duration, full-time position. This position will be based at the Refugio Goliad Prairie in Victoria, TX. Work will be conducted on TNC and partner properties primarily in the coast with the expectation of periodic travel for work operations in other areas of the state. The employee will be expected to 1) assist with preserve management and habitat restoration practices; 2) learn and implement local plant and animal management techniques; 3) assist with prescribed fire preparation and implementation; 4) become familiar with and operate various equipment and machinery; 5) work with TNC staff, partner organizations, and volunteers to accomplish restoration and stewardship objectives; 6) assist in improving and maintaining preserve facilities.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various hand tools or outdoor power equipment.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g.: National Wildfire Coordinating Group FFT2 or higher https://www.nwcg.gov/positions/fft2/position-ipd , First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, ATV safety, and driver’s license).
  • Willingness to take COVID vaccine and/or show vaccination status.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of local natural systems.
  • Specialized experience with plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities. (e.g.: ISA arborist, etc)
  • Ability to operate various types of mechanized equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; farm tractor, skid-steer loader, off-road vehicles, etc.).
  • Current or past NWCG Firefighter training and/or qualification.
  • PC familiarity, including database and/or GIS knowledge.

SALARY INFORMATION


The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $15-$18 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
