WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The GIS specialist provides support for GIS data needs, data visualizations, and web-mapping for conservation initiatives and strategies. They will collaborate with the Spatial Scientist and other members of the science team, and conservation programs to enhance the conservation strategies within the Arizona Chapter. They will manage and maintain GIS data stored in a cloud platform, update and maintain GIS licenses, and maintain the AZ science website.

Essential Functions:

  • GIS support for the science team and conservation programs, including producing maps and performing spatial analyses to inform and advance conservation strategies (approximately 70%).
    • In coordination with the Spatial Scientist, conducts spatial analyses as needed by the conservation programs to advance and implement strategic conservation priorities including maintaining and updating GIS databases that track progress metrics
    • Produces map products, including interactive web maps, story maps, and other graphic products to communicate complex scientific topics using cartographic principles
    • Provides GIS technical support and training to staff so that they can effectively access, manage and create GIS data and metadata from TNC cloud platforms and ArcGIS online
    • Manages process to update annual wet/dry dataset using linear referencing methods and outputs products for public and internal distribution.
  • GIS data management and website maintenance (25%)
    • Manages and curates GIS data, including metadata, in multiple cloud platforms (AWS cloud services and ArcGIS Online)
    • Maintains and updates the AZ Chapter science website.
    • Manages GIS licenses and software installations for the Chapter.
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)
    • Timely completion of administrative functions such as timecards, expense reports and performance reviews.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Master's Degree in science or related field and 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, and analyzing GIS and spatial data.
  • Experience preparing reports of findings.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro software and ArcGIS Online suite of tools.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in geography, GIS, conservation or similar field and 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated.
  • Experience participating on cross functional teams and/or complex projects
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated experience performing spatial analyses, modeling, and producing professional maps
  • Experience with modeling and scripting programs such as R, Python, etc.
  • Experience with WordPress to develop and maintain websites
  • Experience with other website languages and applications (HTML, CSS, etc.)
  • Experience with GIS data management
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English.
  • Ability to synthesize, interpret and communicate scientific information to influence conservation practice.
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
