Finance & Accounting Intern

The Impact Finance & Markets division (IFM) at The Nature Conservancy provides technical and strategic leadership to create transformational impact with the private sector by translating the value of nature and conservation approaches into actionable, science-based strategies that can help solve societal challenges. The Sustainable Debt Team (a sub-team of IFM) collaborates with TNC’s global conservation teams and country offices to help achieve TNC’s 2030 goals by structuring and implementing sovereign debt solutions that generate new funding for conservation and enable governments to make and achieve ambitious conservation policy commitments, such as in the 2021 Blue Bond in Belize , the 2022 Blue Bond in Barbados , the 2023 Blue Bonds in Gabon , and the 2024 Nature Bonds project in Bahamas and Ecuador .
The Intern will support the Sustainable Debt team on Nature Bonds projects by assisting the team with financial modeling and related analysis in connection with business development, internal approvals, financing processes, and post-close monitoring. Through aiding on Nature Bonds transactions, the Intern will have the opportunity to develop their financial modelling, project management, financial analysis, and communication skills. The Intern will also develop market knowledge of the international development finance space, having the opportunity to work on materials for multilateral development banks, credit enhancement providers, governments, and financial institutions. Finally, the intern will gain knowledge of how finance can be used to fund conservation goals and will interact with TNC’s conservation teams to help deliver joint conservation-finance materials.
The Intern will support the deal team with building financial models that assess the likelihood of debt repayment, typically in the context of sovereign refinancings such as those mentioned above. The Intern will be expected to support the team with tasks related to the project such as building and auditing models in accordance with best industry practices and generate table, charts and other outputs for use in Word documents and Power Point presentations, maintain and optimize models through financial close and during post-close operations, summarize the results of modeling and other quantitative analysis in presentations and memoranda, and assist with presentations to senior management and potentially external audiences. As an intern on the team, you will work on innovative debt conversion projects alongside experts while growing your financial modelling, professional skillsets, and market knowledge while tackling real-world conservation financing challenges.
This is a four-month position that will start as soon as the Intern is able to start and requires 20 hours per week. This Intern may be located anywhere in the United States. Must have valid work authorization as no visa or immigration assistance will be provided. There is a possibility the internship may be extended or converted to a full-time position, dependent on available funding and need.
Responsibilities and Scope
- Assist and audit financial models for current and prospective Nature Bonds projects, in accordance with industry best practices.
- Help in the creation of financial outputs for active projects and prospective partners / projects. Active project outputs will consist of financial analyses for governments, investment banks, and multilateral development banks. These may be in English or in French and may also require cooperation with the conservation teams for joint outputs.
- Read and synthesize reports, in English or in French, from non-governmental organizations like the World Bank, IMF, and multilateral development banks and from governments to support active projects and provide insights on prospects.

We are looking for a finance-focused recent graduate (or someone with similar work experience) to help assist our team on the financial aspects of Nature Bonds transactions. If you are interested in developing your career in international finance or conservation finance, this role is for you!
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 2 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
- Experience in developing/using financial models, knowledge of advanced Excel functions (macros, etc.) Note that shortlisted candidates may be asked to work on a brief case study .
- Experience with financial modeling standards (such as FAST).
- Ability to understand key financial documents (term sheet) in the context of the financial model.
Desired Qualifications:
- Multi-lingual skills (strong preference for French) and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
- Attention to detail and high degree of organization, including proactive communication and follow-up.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to present financial information in an attractive, easy-to-understand format.
- Familiarity with debt capital markets, including credit guarantees and insurance, through banking, consulting, corporate finance, and related fields.
- Experience working in interdisciplinary, cross functional teams.

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $25 per hourly rate . This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
