WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Evidence and Learning Specialist for Latin America Region (LAR) is a critical position for success of TNC’s mission and achieving its 2030 Goals. They will coordinate the implementation of dynamic Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) processes and systems to operate effectively. TNC’s science-based planning has identified that LAR has a significant contribution to make to our global goals. LAR applies TNC’s core conservation pathways to 12 large-scale priority geographies (Iconic Places) in 9 countries to deliver measurable, durable, equitable outcomes. The LAR Evidence and Learning Specialist will work alongside the LAR MEL Regional Lead contributing to definition and assessment of Metrics for Outcomes and Intermediate Results to enable adaptive management and reporting. They will establish and lead a process for data quality review and improvement and will support / build capacity of conservation staff across the region for increasing and fostering the best use of evidence for adaptive management.
The LAR Evidence and Learning Specialist will support a wide range of tasks related to Evidence and Data Quality, from reviewing data sets to organizing meetings and trainings (virtual and in-person) and preparing information to provide LAR Outcomes’ progress input for TNC’s Global Impact Reports and Global Data Quality assessments. The Evidence and Learning Specialist will support our Regional MEL Lead in the tracking of progress towards our 2030 Goals.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
The Latin America Region Evidence and Learning Specialist will support the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning work in systematizing and reviewing data quality according to TNC metrics as well as fostering best practices for the use of best evidence for adaptive management. This position will also support LAR Iconic Places teams in the design and development of mid-term evaluations.
The LAR Evidence and Learning Specialist will support the mainstreaming of Learning-based Hub Data Quality reviews. She/he will support 9 Business Units’ conservation teams associated to LAR Iconic Places by gathering and systematizing the evidence to support and stand behind our regional targets according to TNC Metrics guidance, ensuring the information is consistent between Hub structures and MEL Plans, and incorporated accordingly into Adaptive Management processes. By accelerating and sharing data quality best practices, the Evidence and Learning Specialist will foster learning on metrics, outcomes’ progress measuring and strengthening data assessments for counting progress as well as equity components assessments for outcomes’ progress indicators.
Responsibilities & Scope
- TNC Conservation Hub Data Quality Reviews Working alongside LAR Iconic Places’ Conservation Teams in assessing Hub records’ Data Quality (scope of benefits and Outcomes / Intermediate Results’ progress measurements). Developing processes and systems to support teams in data management according to TNC 2030 Goals Metrics, and best MEL Practices.
- Support in Regional Adaptive Management processes - provides significant analytical and evidence-based support for understanding progress towards TNC 2030 Goals. Helps to streamline the use of MEL for Adaptive Management.
- Design and Lead workshops and trainings across the region – to reinforce and standardize Data Quality best practices, tools and MEL knowledge in the region.
- Communication - contributes to reporting efforts and strengthening effective learning and communication of LAR’s progress toward its 2030 Goals.
- Day to Day - coordinate the execution of short-term tactical solutions while helping to develop long-term improvement strategies and plans. Support to LAR MEL Regional Lead with processing information on TNC outcomes metrics and LAR’s progress for all existing and new projects. Under limited supervision acts independently, resolves complex issues within the program area and may act as a resource to others.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Master’s degree in science-related field and 3 years of experience in similar positions or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference for 5 years of practical experience.
- Experience in developing and managing MEL data systems, preferably in a field relevant to nature conservation.
- Experience leading and working with cross functional teams.
- Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.
- Experience preparing reports of findings.
- Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
- Fluent in English.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in Science
- Experience engaging with and co-developing analyses to inform management decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to balance needs for scientific rigor and practical solutions.
- Strong knowledge of common software applications (GIS and statistics packages).
- Training delivery experience.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
