The Associate Director of Marketing for North America Natural Climate Solutions is part of a team of skilled marketing professionals working within the Global Communications Team and is responsible for the marketing support and relationship management for the North America Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) Strategy, specifically focused on carbon mitigation science and forest carbon markets. As a member of the Global Communications Team, the Associate Director. will provide strategic communications direction as well as the tools, support, and direct action necessary to engage targeted audiences to advance carbon mitigation science, reforestation projects, and the use of carbon markets as an essential tool in the fight against climate change.


The Associate Director is responsible for the creation, management, and implementation of strategic communications plans to build awareness, engage targeted audiences, and influence conservation action. The Associate Director will identify key audiences and develop communications plans, materials and actions needed to achieve the conservation goals of the program. The Associate Director. will work collaboratively with others across the Marketing and Communications Division and others across TNC, to maximize effectiveness of overall communications effortsand to ensure alignment in messaging and outreach activities. The Associate Director may supervise one or more direct reports.


  • Serve as the primary marketing point of contact on the issues of carbon mitigation science, reforestation, and carbon markets.
  • Manage and maintain a positive relationship between teams who are working on these issues together.
  • develop and provide comprehensive strategic marketing support and crisis communication guidance.
  • Collaborate with other marketing staff on social media strategies, traditional media outreach, internal communications, digital content creation, and other marketing activities that further the strategic goals of the program.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with external partners on joint announcements.
  • Manage staff and projects.
  • Manage marketing/production budgets.
  • Create content and messaging for web, printed materials, social media, special events, communication projects and issues of prime importance to the North America NCS Strategy
  • Identify strategic issues that need to be addressed by marketing senior management.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of visual identity standards, branding and key messages.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 8 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience supervising staff and teams.
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience in project management, developing marketing strategies and measuring results.


  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, communication, mediation, and negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with climate mitigation issues and carbon markets.
  • Experience in crisis communications.
  • Management experience that includes ability to lead, motivate, set objectives, and manage performance and conflict resolution.
  • Fosters an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Ability to persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups including donors, board members, and the public.
  • Experience working in a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to influence without authority.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in relevant marketing disciplines. Cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing the fiduciary aspects of planning and delivery of budgets.
