Are you passionate about using strategic communications to engage influential individuals and organizations in the environmental space? Do you have experience designing and building strategic communications campaigns that move targeted audiences to action? Rooted in communications and marketing expertise, the Associate Director of Communications for External Affairs will help create and implement a new vision and articulation of TNC’s global government relations and policy initiatives.
They will collaborate with colleagues across the organization as well as with external partners to grow the profile and impact of TNC’s global policy work aimed at achieving conservation goals.


TNC’s External Affairs team works with government leaders, non-profits, businesses, and other key influencers to develop, promote, and implement policies aimed at creating a world where both people and nature thrive. The team secures and influences billions of dollars annually in global investments from governments and non-governmental organizations to preserve lands and waters, fight climate change and preserve biodiversity around the world. The Senior Associate Director of Communications for External Affairs will work closely with teams across the organization as well as external partners to develop and implement marketing, communications and engagement plans that advance TNC’s policy priorities, enhance our profile at international negotiations and meetings, promote TNC’s policy wins, and align messaging with TNC and partner staff to support and execute the organization’s strategic plan, this position will identify case studies, develop messaging, create materials, and train spokespeople – both within TNC and with partner organizations – to influence global change agents including government officials, elected leaders, regulators, and international institutions. The position will also conduct internal communications activities to elevate awareness of policy campaigns, the role of the division and its wins among TNC staff, leadership, and fundraising teams. The ideal candidate will have proven success working within a matrixed and multi-faceted team structure, able to manage multiple projects at one time while collaborating with diverse internal and external partners to meet mutual goals.


  • Works closely with Marketing and Communications colleagues to align External Affairs communications objectives to the organizational editorial calendar.
  • Develops policy content and engagement that supports TNC’s 2030 Climate and Biodiversity goals.
  • Designs, manages, and implements policy marketing and communications strategy in collaboration and coordination with other professionals inside and outside the organization.
  • Leads communication and media initiatives through collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with donor communications team to ensure policy priorities and successes are reflected in donor content.
  • Responsibility and accountability for setting and meeting strategic goals and objectives.
  • Ability to act independently but collaboratively to deliver strategic goals.
  • Writes key messages and communications materials – including blogs, press releases, and web content for Global Lead for Policy and Government Relations.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 9 years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing staff and teams.
  • Experience developing marketing plans and measuring results.
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships
  • Experience leading complex project and program/account management including financial responsibilities, and measuring results of strategic plans and programs.


  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Compelling and succinct writer
  • Experience developing, implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies and strategic marketing plans and initiatives, and specifically developing communications plans and strategies in support of global policy and/or government affairs goals.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
  • Experience and/or understanding of communication best practices at a decentralized organization.
  • Master’s degree or extensive professional experience.
  • Management experience that includes ability to lead, motivate, set objectives and manage performance and resolve conflict..
  • Excellent communications, and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups including legislators, policy makers, the media and the public.
  • Experience fostering an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and managing budgets.
  • Excellent communications, mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in relevant marketing disciplines.
  • Cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships with both creative and account manager personnel at marketing/advertising firms.
