NY Cities Intern

The Cities Program in New York State builds strategies and initiatives to create a healthy, resilient and sustainable urban environment in NYS cities, with a significant focus on New York City. We work with government and non-government partners on key programmatic areas: tackle climate change, improve water quality in and around cities, promote nature and environmental solutions to enhance the quality of life, and reduce urban heat island and air pollution. We are leading practitioners on the science and policy of the NYC urban forest and we convene Forest for All NYC, a coalition of 200+ member organizations committed to equitably expanding tree canopy across NYC.
We’re Looking For You
The NY Cities Team Intern plays a key operational role in enabling the Cities Program team to deliver its conservation impacts more efficiently. By streamlining internal processes and automating workflows, the Intern will help increase staff capacity, improve information flow, and strengthen team agility. The Intern will directly support the team’s ability to advance conservation policy, manage complex projects, and collaborate effectively. Tasks may include but are not limited to: automating a tracker for relevant policy and legislation, setting up a press and media tracker, and leveraging appropriate automation tools for team meeting notes and follow-ups. The Intern will partner closely with their supervisor and team to document current processes, design and/or implement simple no/low-code automations using TNC-approved tools, and deliver user-friendly documentation and demos to the team. This role is ideal for a tech-savvy graduate student interested in strengthening their skills in automation, workflow process design, business operations, or computer science with a mission-driven environmental organization.
Responsibilities & Scope
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $17.00 - 20.71 hourly. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.

Responsibilities & Scope
- Work with supervisor to assess and prioritize 3-5 workflows in the Cities Program that would benefit from automation and increased efficiency.
- Create clear workflow maps to document the “current state” of each priority workflow
- Conduct research on automation tools available to TNC teams and develop recommendations on the best tool and process for each priority workflow. Implement no/low-code automations using TNC-approved tools (e.g. Power Automate, SharePoint, Workday integrations, Teams, Zoom, or equivalent tools).
- Document guidance and produce short demo or training session for NY Cities Team members.
- Enrolled in a Graduate program throughout the duration of the internship.
- Reside in New York State.
- Current enrollment as a graduate student in information systems, public administration, business, computer science, environmental science, sustainability, policy, urban planning, or related field.
- Willingness to work remotely and independently (with guidance) 35 hours per week (full-time) as a summer intern.
- Interest in or a passion to learn about environmental issues, public policy, urban conservation, or related topics.
- Strong technical aptitude and comfort learning new digital tools quickly.
- Passion for current and evolving trends in relevant technologies.
- Ability to communicate (written and verbally) accurately, transparently, and to apply feedback.
- Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
- Growth mindset, curiosity, and comfort working with ambiguity. Ability to incorporate feedback in a flexible and iterative process
- Some familiarity with New York City (government, geography, or policy landscape) is helpful but not required.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
