WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Community Engagement Specialist will develop and grow a community engagement program and activities at Illinois Kankakee Sands in partnership with adjacent communities like Pembroke, and Hopkins Park, IL. This position will support the Nature Conservancy's conservation goals by serving as a liaison and informational contact between the organization and outside agencies or companies.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU


The Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for maintaining existing and creating new community engagement initiatives and supporting all business unit functions and conservation priorities. As a community engagement specialist, efforts will be directed to developing projects that TNC and the community can do together. They will help raise the organization’s profile through select and strategic venues and partnerships, may serve as “brand ambassador” for the Conservancy’s mission, and inspire people to want to learn more and engage with the organization in meaningful ways. This role will also develop and maintain strong relationships with communities adjacent to the Kankakee Sands Preserve and will serve as a conduit to inspire change within TNC’s programs.

The Community Engagement Specialist may serve as a point of contact to inform Conservancy partners and elected and appointed officials of Conservancy policies and positions. The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a strategic, culturally, and locally relevant community engagement program in partnership with preserve staff, local partners, and community members aimed at:

  • Building and strengthening relationships and acting as point of contact between local organizations including but not limited to Churches, Community Development Corporation of Pembroke-Hopkins Park and Black Oaks Center for Sustainable Renewable Living and individual community members and The Nature Conservancy, with a focus on Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) people, youth, and families.
  • Deepening the Conservancy’s understanding and communication with local communities.
  • Developing and implement strategies that broaden constituency in support of conservation.
  • Engaging those who are interested in conservation but not yet familiar with the Conservancy.
  • Increasing the Conservancy’s visibility.
  • Supporting conservation goals, while meeting health, well-being, and quality of life priorities of community stakeholders.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s or Associates degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience in community engagement or 5 -7 years of related experience without advanced degree.
  • Must meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background checks.
  • Experience establishing trust with and building lasting relationships.
  • Experienced writer and editor.
  • Communication and public speaking skills experience.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and measuring community engagement plans and programs.
  • Experience supervising and managing staff, volunteers, interns, seasonal staff and/or teams.
  • Experience working through an interdisciplinary environmental justice and/or social justice lens and cultural competency and demonstrated track record working with diverse populations.
  • Experience using existing technology to achieve desired results.

SALARY INFORMATION


Proposed starting salary range for this position is $52,400 - $55,675 depending on background and experience.
