All TNC staff based in the U.S. or a U.S. Territory whose work involves shared housing or who are designated to act as first responders in the event of an emergency or accident, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The staff and facilities on TNC’s Palmyra Preserve supports scientific research by TNC, the USFWS, and world-renowned research institutions. Staff are hired on a seasonal basis for approximately 3 months at a time to run the operations, maintain the facilities and support visitor and research trips. Board and lodging are provided while on-island.

The successful candidate must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Passport with an expiration date later than your term of employment, proof of a physical examination showing good health, a current tetanus vaccination and first aid/CPR certification.

Palmyra Atoll is one of the most spectacular wilderness areas on Earth. Located 1,000 miles south of Hawai‘i, Palmyra is a 680-acre atoll with 480,000 acres of lagoons, coral reefs, and submerged lands. TNC’s Palmyra Preserve is located within a US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Refuge within a protected Marine National Monument. The Nature Conservancy owns and operates a Preserve at Palmyra to care for this special place while learning and developing innovations to improve ecosystem health and resilience and enhance biodiversity. The Hospitality Specialist is responsible for planning and preparing the facilities to receive visitors. They are responsible for daily galley clean-up including dishes, floors, storage areas, bathrooms and showers and systematic deep cleaning of all cabins, associated living areas, recreation areas and the galley. This position is also responsible for planning and preparation of high-quality meals, of breakfast, lunch and dinner for guests, staff, and volunteers. The Hospitality Specialist is responsible for using the FIFO system for tracking inventory, stocking food items in refrigerators, freezers and dry storage, and the proper rotation of all food and hospitality inventory items to ensure efficiency, organization, and safety. The Hospitality Specialist, like all Palmyra seasonal staff, should have the ability to respond to medical emergencies and other duties as assigned.

Cooking and hosting at TNC’s Palmyra Preserve are unique experiences. Although TNC maintains commercial cleanliness standards, the Palmyra Program does not operate a “commercial kitchen.” To maintain these standards in Palmyra’s challenging environment, our Hospitality staff spend approximately 50% of their time doing daily and deep cleaning. Palmyra’s galley produces meals based on a simple inventory that includes shelf stable items. Producing high quality meals from a predetermined ingredient list requires our cooks to have the ability to make many items from scratch and to have the creativity to incorporate canned and packaged food into high quality meals for guests and staff alike.


  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift up to 50 pounds, sometimes under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to live and work productively within a small and confined community on a remote location for up to 3 months, adjusting as needed to support science and philanthropic endeavors.
  • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, providing and obtaining needed information to ensure smooth operations, and a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Will work 6 days per week, in variable weather conditions (hot, humid, wet), at a remote atoll location, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions will involve considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain, frequent possibility of injury, long hours in an isolated setting, with exposure to petroleum and cleaning products.
  • All staff are asked to be physically and mentally prepared to respond to an emergency 24 hours a day. In the event of an emergency, staff may be tasked with specific duties to ensure communal safety and welfare. This may include responding to minor/major medical emergencies by administering first aid or CPR, diving accidents, stranded vessels, tsunami evacuation events, marine rescue events, fuel spills and/or fire containment, etc.
  • Depending on skill and interest, may be asked to train with designated staff to respond as operator or crew in the event of an emergency. These situations could include operation of rescue vessel, towing disabled vessel to safety, or performing first aid to injured persons.
  • All staff will assist with community chores as needed, even on days off.
  • All staff are expected to follow best practices, help develop tools and resources, and share lessons learned and methods to ensure consistencies across seasons.
  • Supervises no staff but may direct or convey work instructions to other crew or volunteers. Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.


  • High School Diploma and at least 1-year culinary experience in a professional food services environment within the last 5 years or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with current working knowledge of kitchen operations including meal presentations, baking, sautéing, grilling, and the preparation and proper handling of meat, fish, assorted cold foods, and safe knife handling skills.
  • Culinary experience maintaining a sanitary kitchen work environment and knowledge of a facility deep cleaning process. Serve Safe or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with MS Word and Excel in producing reports and maintaining inventories
  • Cumulative 1-year experience working in a confined community such as aboard a ship, field camp, or remote field station.


  • 2-3 years’ experience in a professional food service environment. Strong preference for experience providing high quality meals in a remote, camp environment.
  • Professional housekeeping experience.
  • Experience cooking items from scratch; example, baking bread from flour.
  • Experience preparing meals for VIP trips in remote settings.
  • Wilderness First Aid or First Responder Certification
  • Ability to operate small vessels including maneuvering in close quarters and experience with towing.
  • State of Hawai’i or other government recognized Safe Boating Course.
  • Professional or volunteer experience in an applied conservation, environmental restoration, invasive species removal, or conservation outreach setting.
