Over eighty percent of North American ecosystems depend on fire for essential ecological functions. Indigenous people have used fire for millennia and contemporary land managers continue the practice, although not to the same degree or effect. The Nature Conservancy and our partners seek a better future with fire—one where natural areas are sustained by and ready for fire and where communities are empowered and prepared to live with fire.

TNC-South Carolina aims to facilitate an increase of 50,000 acres of prescribed fire across SC over the next 5 years. As part of this goal, this position will support TNC and partner organizations with prescribed fire operations, planning, and preparations. The impact will be not only seen in the number of acres treated, but in individuals trained for Rx fire and in strengthening relationships with agency partners.


  • Supervise and efficiently coordinate the activities of the seasonal crew during non-fire activities. Serve as part of a prescribed burn crew during fires as directed by fire management staff.
  • Act as liaison between crew and Conservancy and U.S. Forest Service fire management staff.
  • Maintain detailed records of burn crew time and expenses, and make sure these are submitted to designated support staff in a timely manner.
  • Operate fire equipment, if qualified, including ignition devices, 4WD trucks, ATV’s, UTV’s, portable pumps, pump engines, port-a-tanks, tractors, backpack blowers, brush cutters, chain saws, hand tools, and GPS units.
  • Maintain equipment and tools used on prescribed burns.
  • Perform fire preparations including tree cutting (and other chainsaw work), raking, handline construction, boundary delineation, etc. Must have familiarity with the safe operation of equipment and off-road vehicles and must follow recommended safety guidelines and precautions specified for said work.
  • Assist with fireline construction, implementation of prescribed burns and mop-up activities.
  • Conduct routine management work such as removal of invasive species, forest management, ecological monitoring, fence construction and repair, boundary posting, and other related stewardship activities.
  • Ensure that all crew activities are accomplished safely, complying with Conservancy safety guidelines and protocol.
  • Function as both leader and member of a work team, in a high stress team environment.
  • Convey work instructions to Burn Crew members.
  • Monitor the progress of Burn Crew Members toward achieving fire management goals.
  • Makes decisions on the fire line based upon evaluation of fire behavior, available resources and judgment.
  • Perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Will adhere to TNC/partner protocols on COVID-19, and ensure compliance of these from subordinates.


The U.S. Forest Service-TNC Interagency Burn Crew Manager position serves a critical role within TNC-SC’s fire program, as both a crew manager and liaison with USFS personnel on the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests. Prescribed fire work will be conducted statewide, from the mountains to the coast. As such, Burn Crew Manager will learn to burn in a variety of terrains and fuel types, from montane oak-hickory forests to southern rough in the Lowcountry piney woods.

The Crew Manager supervises three seasonal, nomadic Burn Crew Technicians. They are the crew’s liaison with the fire management staff in the state and are supervised by the South Carolina Fire & Stewardship Manager. They may also act as line supervisor on burns as assigned by the burn boss. The crew will focus on fire-related activities, including prescribed fire implementation, in and around the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests. When not committed to the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests, the crew will work with The Nature Conservancy and other partner agencies in South Carolina.

As part of the incumbent’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. The Burn Crew Manager may assist on wildland fire operations with federal, state, or private partners, or travel to other areas of the state or out-of-state to assist other TNC programs or partners on prescribed or wildland fires. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works.

Position will begin on January 2, 2023 and terminate on May 26, 2023 (end date negotiable). Position will be based out of Awendaw, SC, with housing provided. Hourly compensation will range from $21-22/hour, based on qualifications and experience.


  • Qualified Single Resource Engine Boss (ENGB) and successful completion of ENGB task book. Requirements for ENGB can be found in the Conservancy Fire Management Manual at:
  • Must have meticulous attention to detail in tracking equipment maintenance needs, supplies to purchase, etc.
  • Individual is a strong self-starting leader who with minimal oversight can keep crew engaged & productive.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.
  • Experience supervising staff is required.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required i.e., First Aid/CPR, etc.
  • Ability to achieve a NWCG arduous wildland firefighter rating by carrying a 45lb-pack 3 miles in less than 45 minutes.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.


  • Qualified as FAL2, or with ample chainsaw experience to safely supervise crew during saw operations.
  • Medical experience or qualifications.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect the safety and work of firefighters within squad.
  • Ability to convey work instructions to crew members and communicate well with Burn Boss.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a wide variety of people in stressful conditions and to follow assignments closely.
  • PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain burn records and complete necessary time/expense reports.
