Fire and Stewardship Seasonal

The Fire and Stewardship Seasonal performs and participates in preserve operations and prescribed fire operations. They maintain preserve areas and perform land and wildlife management activities. The Fire and Stewardship Seasonal supervises no staff but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers. They conduct vegetation management and/or conduct species monitoring and may also manage livestock. The Fire and Stewardship Seasonal will assist in prescribed burn preparation and implementation as well as maintenance and operation of tools and equipment. They may work long hours independently in isolated settings while making day-to-day decisions as delegated by a supervisor. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Preference given to those with S130/190 and S212 certifications.
This is a temporary (180-day duration), full-time position. This position will be based at the Barton Creek Habitat Preserve in Bee Cave, TX. The position requires during the first 30 days of hire, passing the Work Capacity Test consisting of a three-mile hike, carrying a forty-five pound pack, within forty-five minutes. If this is not timely completed, the role will automatically end as a result.
Work will be conducted on TNC and partner properties primarily in Central/West Texas with the expectation of periodic travel for work operations in other areas of the state up to 25% of the duration. The employee will be expected to 1) assist with preserve management and habitat restoration practices; 2) learn and implement local plant and animal management techniques; 3) assist with prescribed fire preparation and implementation; 4) become familiar with and operate various equipment and machinery; 5) work with TNC staff, partner organizations, and volunteers to accomplish restoration and stewardship objectives; 6) assist in improving and maintaining preserve facilities.

What You’ll Bring:
High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in a science-related field or related experience in land management.
Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
Experience operating various types of equipment safely and efficiently (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
Experience working in a team environment.
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
Desired Qualifications
1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program . Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18-20 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
