YOUR POSITION WITH TNC


Are you a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and service-minded professional? The Associate Director for Strategic Events will play a lead role in conceptualizing, planning and executing a wide range of high-level, targeted, purposeful events designed to elevate The Nature Conservancy on the world stage and advance TNC’s conservation goals.

The Associate Director of Events will focus on more than just logistics; they will provide leadership and direction on event strategy, content, and evaluation. They will make recommendations and ensure comprehensive follow-up strategies. The Associate Director of Events will take initiative to learn new skills, advise on new event technology and problem solve, as well as understand and anticipate needs. Beyond delivering exceptional events, the Associate Director of Events will lead project teams, help to optimize processes and workflows, innovate our offerings, and look for opportunities to continue telling the TNC story on the world stage.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Associate Director of Events will work towards meeting the strategic priorities of Marketing and Communications by implementing and managing meetings and events plans and strategies. They will help implement a comprehensive events strategy and manage logistics for virtual and live meetings and events that drives engagement and brand awareness. They will be responsible for evaluating and selecting vendors , and will manage vendor relationship and payments as required. They will assess needs and oversee the development of comprehensive programs, including the design of curriculum or schedules. They will be responsible for ensuring the programmatic work is a collaborative and well-integrated effort across the organization, including organizing internal communications.

They will reinforce consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provide direction related to meetings and events execution. They will provide post events reports and develop best practices for virtual and live events as well as track measures and indicators for success. The Associate Director of Events will provide advice, guidance, and oversees training programs related to meetings and events. They will serve as team leader for the enhancement of systems and tools used by the team, including Cvent and other events platforms. The Associate Director of Events will leverage constructive and effective relationships with a wide range of people, including staff, public and private sector colleagues, vendors, and donors. They will serve as the direct liaison with senior leadership and executives.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
  • Implement a comprehensive events strategy to furthering TNC’s conservation goals;
  • Develop and refine a variety of event models (in-person, virtual, and hybrid) designed to effectively engage and cultivate core constituencies to maximize the TNC brand. Scope of events to include (but not limited to) signature events, policy events and campaign events;
  • Evaluate event proposals to determine feasibility and effectiveness for accomplishing objectives; refine team event proposals to align with best practices, staff resources, and budget; make recommendations to Director on specific event proposals;
  • Ensure that prior to launch, every event has a defined purpose and actionable follow up strategy to maximize development outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities to broaden audience for The Nature Conservancy through strategic partnerships;
  • May supervise one or more administrative or professional staff, including training, professional development, establishing clear directions, setting “stretch” objectives, and overseeing the execution of day-to-day work;
  • Conceive, design and manage complex and diversified projects, directing work of staff, managing budget, and ensuring program accountability;
  • Conceive and lead new programs/initiatives that will ensure program and organization-wide goals are achieved;
  • Develop and administer budget, evaluate results and develop corrective strategies, as needed;
  • Direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements;
  • Ensure that programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, and financial standards are met and managed for ethical compliance;
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally-charged information;
  • Make strategic decisions; decisions made may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally;
  • Minimize legal risk to the Conservancy and ensure legal compliance with applicable state and local regulations;
  • Manage strategic initiatives through collaboration with stakeholders in order to enhance performance in accordance with short and long-term objectives;
  • Act independently to resolve complex issues within program area;
  • Manage responsibility and accountability for meeting strategic goals and objectives;
  • Travel occasionally and on short notice, working long hours and weekends; and
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience or equivalent combination, including 3 years working various roles in relevant field;
  • Experience in planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities;
  • Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team;
  • Experience developing, managing and implementing multiple projects and strategic goals;
  • Experience working across complex organizations;
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across multiple organizational levels; and
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles, practices, and procedures of relevant field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated;
  • Excellent communication skills via presentations, conversations, and documents;
  • Well versed in event technology and virtual platforms
  • Event experience with corporates, NGOs and nonprofits
  • Experience with graphic design software, such as InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc., a plus
  • Experience managing a geographically dispersed team;
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline;
  • Proficiency in synthesizing materials from multiple sources into a coherent and accurate summary;
  • Proficiency in working independently as well as jointly with colleagues on a team; and/or
  • Understanding of best practices in non-profit management.
