The Applied Economist works closely with other staff to provide technical, economic, and coordination support to policy and impact finance teams related to market and policy-based conservation initiatives, both globally and in key geographies around the world. The ideal candidate will have a background in economics and/or an equivalent quantitative major and experience working with both spatial and socio-economic data. The Applied Economist will be responsible for supporting economic analyses and data aggregation related to the costs and benefits of conservation. Their work will help inform conservation investments and finance initiatives and will provide key insights and information on equity and the distribution of impacts.

The position reports to the Senior Economist in the Center for Sustainability Science. The Applied Economist will work closely with TNC’s External Affairs team and Impact Finance and Markets team, as well as other TNC strategy and regional programs. The Center for Sustainability Science at The Nature Conservancy provides science leadership to translate the value of nature and nature-based solutions into actionable, science-based strategies that can help solve societal challenges. The Center works hand-in-hand with public and private sector decision-makers to co-create solutions, drawing on TNC’s grounded experience and expertise around the world and the global scale of our strategies and partnerships


The Applied Economist identifies, collects, and manages data to inform conservation investment approaches and policy, such as US Census Bureau survey data. The Applied Economist will be expected to lead and/or support work in creating scientific surveys and research, aggregating data, writing reports and developing proposals as needed. In addition, the Applied Economist will help manage critical collaborations with scientists across TNC and at external institutions. They will help develop a vision for TNC’s policy and finance work and provide input into the creation of a collaborative work plan for the economic questions related to this work.


  • Compiles data, resolves disparities, and communicate process and results to team members
  • Administer and coordinate collaborations related to a specific policy or finance scope of work.
  • Disseminate resources, data, and training to staff and partners.
  • May work with a small group of staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.
  • May manage a grant, contract or request for proposal.
  • Provide input into the creation of a science and economics vision and help inform direction for TNC’s future policy and finance work.
  • Develop strong relationships across internal and external collaborators, including input into identifying key strategic research partners.
  • Successfully manages work streams to ensure on-time and high quality deliverables and on-time delivery.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in economics-related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing and working with microeconomic data and related software experience, including R or Stata.
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information, including clear data graphics.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.


  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
  • Ability to understand program budget development and monitoring.
  • Ability to interpret guidelines and evaluate information and adapt accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Experience conducting surveys, recording data and writing project reports.
  • Strong knowledge of common software applications, including Stata or R.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities; experience leading complex projects with scientific and policy attributes preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and implement complex projects in an unstructured environment.
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary groups, using influence and interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with corporations, partners, donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills.
