Purpose of Role:

Over the last few years The Crown Estate set a new strategy with sustainability at its core, and now has agreed business-wide commitments to net zero & energy security, nature recovery and social & economic impact. The Group Sustainability team is now transitioning to support the whole business and in particular our three business units (Urban, Marine and Windsor, Rural & Coastal) to deliver on these four strategic pillars (three areas of sustainability as well as responsible financial returns) as an integrated part of how our business creates value – both for ourselves and for our customers as well as wider stakeholders and communities across the UK.

This role is critical to enabling the Group team to effectively support and champion an integrated approach to sustainability across the business and with key external stakeholders. The role reports to the Sustainable Business Transformation Director and will work across both the Group and Embedded Sustainability teams and all other teams in the business, to communicate the enterprise sustainability ambitions and our vision for a future-proof business which is a global leader in sustainability. This will also require close engagement with Finance teams as we continue to embed how sustainability is a critical aspect of long term value, delivering future-proof return on investment.

Main accountabilities:

  • Work with others in finance and sustainability to continue to update the Value Creation Framework to operate effectively as TCE’s main decision-making framework, ensuring alignment to our latest sustainability strategies across all 3 impact areas. This includes maturing how we balance sustainability criteria with financial criteria in line with our remit, ensuring alignment with other relevant teams (to include Ops, Legals and External Affairs)
  • Review conflicts and co-benefits across 3 sustainability impact areas working closely with SME Directors as well as embedded teams and key group partners including investment, people team, risk and reporting to deliver recommendations for integrated tools (both hard tools and soft tools) in a coordinated manner
  • Work with Finance & investment to assess prioritization and support evolution of capital allocation framework to ensure activity across the business delivers impact in line with our strategic priorities
  • Play a role in raising the business’ understanding of relevant sustainability matters e.g. gathering insights through external events and attending stakeholder meetings
  • Support Sustainability leadership team with targeted briefings and reporting on areas of holistic value creation across impact areas, including related programmes and budgets, to include engaging with other leadership teams across the business on the same briefings.
  • Build relationships with internal stakeholders to enable understanding of other priorities and workstreams across the business.
  • Ad hoc projects to support as required by Head/ Directors.
  • Lessons learnt and workshop logistics and reporting
  • Assist teams across the business to understand what the sustainability ambitions mean for them
  • Set up governance for sustainability framework, working with Ops and finance teams to enable
  • Maintain regular feedback from the business units on what is or is not working, challenges and successes
  • Develop roadmaps for sustainability delivery across the enterprise

Most important skills based requirements:

  • Understanding of sustainability frameworks and fundamentals (e.g. environmental, social and socio-economic impact, climate action/net zero, nature/biodiversity, social and community value)
  • Experience in economic, financial appraisals or ROI analysis desirable
  • Appropriate qualification in a related discipline or equivalent experience, such as project management or PRINCE2
  • Ability to work under own initiative as well as part of a team.
  • Strong communications skills both written and verbal
  • Capability to navigate complex stakeholders, build relationships and problem solve with others
