Supplier Industrialization Engineer, Battery Materials

What to Expect

Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for critical raw materials, component production, and qualification activities at suppliers. This role will be responsible for selecting, qualifying, and scaling battery cell materials (focuses on cathode, e.g. LFP and its precursor) manufacturing processes, and quality systems at Tesla supplier locations. In this role, you will work closely with many organizations both internal and external to Tesla, taking new battery designs from initial concept through into full production.

The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. What You'll Do
  • Review, setup, qualify, and scale process flow for cathode/precursor material manufacturing
  • Monitor production output at existing facilities and support expansion programs with existing suppliers
  • Setup in-process QC, OQC, and corresponding IQC material quality controls; qualify/improve/develop required metrology for the same
  • Work together with suppliers on production process optimization and quality yield improvement. e.g. metallic impurity control
  • Support material/production related FA at supplier locations
  • Conduct project management activities at supplier locations and ensure all required milestones are meeting Tesla product qualification on time
  • Act as a technical contact point for battery cathode material manufacturing processes and coordinate activities within internal and external teams

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of industrial experience in battery cathode manufacturing processes and quality control
  • Experience characterizing powder materials properties, PSD, SSA, press density, morphology by SEM, etc.
  • Experience developing IPQC/OQC/IQC quality controls, and metrology qualification for cell materials
  • Must be well versed in statistical data analysis & process capability analysis, including GRR, Cpk, yield, etc.
  • Working knowledge of battery cell manufacturing requirements, cell performance requirements and corresponding relationship to cathode material characteristics. Experience in high volume manufacturing is desired
  • Ability to travel – 30%

Expected Compensation

$85,760 - $197,160/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
