What to Expect
Tesla’s traction inverter team is looking for a skilled and motivated mechanical engineering student to push the power electronics propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team is presently developing next generation designs and will allow the intern to grow technically and personally while experiencing life at Tesla with projects that are critical to their team’s success. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with.
What You’ll Do
  • Design and 3D modeling of mechanical components and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, heat sinks, insulation systems, high voltage connectors, etc.
  • Develop text fixtures and engineering test plans for components design validation
  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies
  • Investigate design and production problems and implement creative solutions
  • Collaborate with electrical and production engineering teams to successfully design, validate and manufacture traction inverter
What You’ll Bring
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, currently working towards a MS, or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
  • Experience using 3D mechanical design and analysis tools (CATIA V5 and/or V6, COMSOL, ANSYS Icepak, StarCCM)
  • Proven interest in mechanical design engineering through extracurricular activities and projects
  • Familiarity in a programming language such as Python or MATLAB
  • Genuine curiosity and willingness to understand how our products are designed, built and how they operate; detail-oriented and execution focused

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design)
  • Experience designing and building mechanical assemblies
  • Material science knowledge of materials used in electronics packaging (metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, thermal interface materials, etc.)
  • Experience using GD&T to control part features
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals
