Controls Engineer, Engineering Development Program Cohort (Spring 2025)

What to Expect

Tesla is developing and launching our new grad Engineering Development Program, with an emphasis on Controls Engineering. Trainees will join senior engineers at Gigafactory Texas for orientation, enroll in a 12-week instructor led class designed in collaboration with our local college partner, and complete a certification through commissioning, integration and sustaining existing automated controls and robotics systems over ~6 months. Similarly, trainees will learn how to lead design and development of automation equipment and assembly lines for new products with continuous improvement projects.

Upon completion of the program, trainees will graduate with a Tesla certificate and receive support for full-time career placement.


What You'll Do

Program graduates will be equipped with:

  • Expertise in crafting and sustaining a controls engineering framework to meet manufacturing and development needs
  • Proficiency in evolving CCS and DCS strategies for enhanced site performance
  • Goal-setting acumen within the controls support domain, driven by customer feedback and aligned with Tesla’s development goals
  • Skills in conceptualizing equipment designs that balance product specs, process controls, cost, complexity, and lead-time limits
  • Capability to engineer compliant industrial electrical control panels and produce comprehensive system schematics
  • Advanced programming skills for PLC logic that is structured, maintainable, and interacts with subsystems and third-party equipment
  • Proficiency in implementing ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant safety systems for safeguarding high-volume manufacturing equipment
  • Ability to design user-centric HMI screens for complex machinery that simplify troubleshooting
  • Experience with electrical cabinet construction, field wiring, and plumbing for pneumatic and fluid systems
  • Skills to integrate automated processes into production and train Maintenance and Production Teams, Knowledge to interface with plant-wide MES to monitor product quality and process variables

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or equivalent experience (prior to program launch)
  • Coursework in analog and digital circuits, control systems, logic, and programming
  • Exposure to programming microcontrollers
  • Proficiency with CAD (AutoCAD, CATIA, SolidWorks)
  • Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, well organized with meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong propensity to build, assemble, fix and program things is preferred, use of common power and hand tools is preferred
  • Programming experience in C++, Python, SQL or similar language is preferred
  • Experience with industrial electrical panel design, PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff or similar), HMI/SCADA programming (Allen-Bradley, Ignition or similar), industrial robots (Fanuc, Kuka or similar) and Servo motors and controllers (Kinetix or similar) is preferred
