About Us:

Welcome to Terra One, an exciting-fast growing company focused on developing and operating large-scale battery storage systems in Germany. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, our company is driving forward the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure in order to make a significant contribution to achieving climate neutrality.

Our Mission:

At Terra One, we accelerate the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure by developing and implementing innovative solutions. Our initial focus is on battery storage, a crucial component for establishing a flexible and environmentally friendly power grid. By providing energy when it is most needed, we help improve the reliability and efficiency of the power grid while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions. Equally important to our mission is our AI-based energy trading in the European market, which works hand in hand with our battery storage solutions.

Our Team:

The energy trading unit is responsible for optimizing assets across all markets, balancing renewables, and proprietary trading. We trade short term power algorithmically in an expanding geographical scope and have a highly technical team of veteran software engineers, leading AI experts and power trading professionals.

About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced Team Lead Data Engineer to head our data team (currently : 4 engineers) and play a key role in scaling Terra One’s data platform. You will design and implement scalable, efficient data solutions that power our analytics, machine learning models, and trading decisions.

This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical ownership, architectural direction, and team enablement. You’ll work closely with our ML and trading domain leads to ensure data is reliable, timely, and production-ready across all systems.

If you’re ready to make an impact in the energy transition and shape the backbone of our data infrastructure, we look forward to your application.

Responsibilities

Data Architecture & Management

Design and maintain scalable, cost-efficient data models, storage, and processing systems (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, etc.).

Communicate with external and internal data providers and ensure smooth data onboarding.

Ensure data accessibility and usability across the organization via well-structured repositories and APIs.

Data Pipelines & Processing

Develop, maintain, and optimize automated pipelines from multiple data sources (APIs, sFTP, web scraping, etc.).

Implement robust ETL/ELT workflows for both real-time and batch processing using Airflow or similar tools.

Ensure data freshness, reliability, and completeness across the full data lifecycle.

Data Quality & Observability

Build monitoring, validation, and alerting systems to ensure high data quality and integrity.

Develop dashboards and internal data products that empower analytics, ML, and trading teams.

Continuously analyze data to identify inconsistencies, anomalies, and optimization potential.

Cross-Team Integration

Partner with ML and trading teams to deliver reliable datasets and feature pipelines for predictive and decision models.

Collaborate on deployment, model feedback loops, and real-time data interfaces.

Contribute to the design and scaling of Terra One’s cloud-based data infrastructure.

Leadership & Strategy

Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, fostering a high-performance and learning-oriented culture.

Define and execute the technical roadmap for the data platform, aligning with company and product strategy.

Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring delivery reliability, cost efficiency, and long-term maintainability.

What We Expect From You

Strong Python expertise, including experience with data engineering libraries such as pandas, dask, and workflow frameworks like Airflow or Prefect.

Proven experience designing and operating data infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) — especially BigQuery and Cloud Storage, as well as integrating with external streaming systems such as Kafka.

Solid understanding of ETL/ELT architectures, data modeling, and workflow orchestration.

Practical experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB), including schema design and optimization.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Terraform, GitHub Actions), and modern data ops practices.

Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows.

Strong grasp of data quality, observability, and cost optimization principles in a production context.

Who You Are

You hold a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management (Wirtschaftsinformatik), Environmental Informatics, Renewable Energy, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field — or bring equivalent practical experience.

You have proven experience in data engineering or data infrastructure, ideally with exposure to production-grade, high-availability systems.

You combine software engineering excellence with a strong sense for scalable, maintainable architecture.

You enjoy leading by example — mentoring others, improving processes, and setting technical direction while staying hands-on.

You are structured and self-driven, with the ability to balance strategic priorities and day-to-day execution.

You are a collaborative communicator who thrives in cross-functional teams (trading, ML, product) and values clarity and transparency.

You are motivated by impact and purpose, and want to contribute to the decarbonization of the energy system.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience or strong interest in the energy or power markets, ideally with exposure to trading, renewables, or grid operations.

Background in a startup or high-growth environment, with a track record of building systems that scale under real-world constraints.

Familiarity with data compliance and security topics (e.g. access control) is a plus.

Based in Berlin or open to relocation
