Sustera Foundation is a climate and sustainability-focused organisation working at the intersection of community resilience, decentralised governance, and inclusive economic development in Kerala, India.

About the opportunity

We are looking for a part-time Fundraiser to work with us for approximately 10 hours per week. This is a relationship-driven role. You will be speaking to real people who already care about what we do and helping them become active supporters.

Sustera is at a stage where we need to build a sustainable individual giving base. We have a network of people who know our work and are ready to contribute — what's missing is someone who can have the conversations, close the commitments, and keep the relationship alive.

? What you'll doPhase 1 — First 2 months: Build the pipeline

  • Reach out to warm leads — people in Sustera's existing network who have expressed interest in supporting the work.
  • Set up meetings — in person, over calls, or video — including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Have honest, compelling 1:1 conversations about Sustera's mission and impact.
  • Close initial commitments — help donors decide on an amount and a giving rhythm.
  • Build a simple intake system to track donations, donor details, and communication history.

Phase 2 — Ongoing: Nurture and grow

  • Provide regular updates to donors on how their money is being used — project milestones, stories from the field, impact data.
  • Keep donors engaged and connected — not just informed, but emotionally invested.
  • Help Sustera develop templated updates, thank-you notes, and impact summaries that can scale.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen relationships — invite donors to events, share photo/video updates, connect them with the team.
  • Gradually help grow the donor base through referrals and warm introductions.

? What we need from you

Must-haves

  • Genuine passion for climate action, community development, or social impact — you need to believe in the work to talk about it convincingly.
  • Strong spoken English (or strong fluency in another Indian language with a donor community) — you will be having real conversations with donors. How you speak matters as much as what you say.
  • Strong interpersonal skills — you're comfortable picking up the phone, having a conversation with someone you've never met, and asking for support.
  • Reliability and follow-through — donors need to feel cared for, not chased. You need to be consistent.
  • CRM and digital organisation skills — you must be comfortable using a CRM tool (or learning one quickly), managing spreadsheets, tracking donor conversations, and keeping records up to date. This is non-negotiable — the role depends on it.
  • Availability for evenings and weekends when donors are free — this is when most conversations will happen.

Great to have

  • Previous experience in fundraising, sales, donor relations, or community mobilisation.
  • Experience writing compelling updates or impact communications.
  • Familiarity with the Indian individual giving / philanthropy space.
  • Any experience with Notion, Google Workspace, CRM tools, or communication platforms.

How to apply

Before you begin, please have these ready:

  1. A link to a short video (2–3 minutes). You have two options:
  • Option A — Donor Roleplay (preferred): Record yourself roleplaying a conversation with a potential donor. Imagine you are speaking to someone who has heard of Sustera but doesn't know the details. Using what you can learn from our website (sustera.org), introduce the foundation, explain the work we do, share why it matters, and make a compelling case for why they should support us. Show us how you would build trust and inspire action in a real conversation.
  • Option B — Personal Introduction: If the roleplay feels difficult, record a general introduction instead. Tell us who you are, why you believe you are a great fit for this role, why you are passionate about raising funds for climate causes, what relationship-building skills you bring, and how you would nurture and grow long-term relationships with individual donors.
  • Upload to YouTube (unlisted), Google Drive, or Loom.
  1. A link to your CV or LinkedIn (optional but helpful).
  2. Be ready to describe:
  • Your fundraising or relationship-building experience with specific examples.
  • Your approach to building a donor update system from scratch — we want to see how you think.

NOTE: Long-term commitment required. This is not a short-term gig. We are looking for someone who can commit to working with us for at least 2–3 years. Fundraising is built on trust, and donor relationships take time to develop and mature. The person in this role will become a key point of contact for our supporters and that only works if you're here for the long run. Please apply only if you can see yourself in this role for a sustained period. Additionally, this role requires consistent availability across evenings and weekends, which can be very difficult to manage alongside a demanding full-time job. If you are currently in a full-time position that leaves little flexibility, this may not be the right fit.

This role is open to a wide range of people. You might be a college student looking for meaningful part-time work that builds real skills and earns additional income. Or you might be an experienced professional — a teacher, a social worker, a community organiser — who wants to contribute your skills to climate action. What matters most is that you care about the cause, you're comfortable talking to people, and you're willing to learn. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
