Municipal Sustainability Manager - Townships of Wilmot and Wellesley
As the Township Municipal Sustainability Manager you will:
Manage and plan Corporate Climate Action including:
- Develop a three year corporate climate action work plan for the Townships in line with the supports available through SWR’s Impact Network Program. This includes current GHG, waste and water data, analysis of the opportunities for reductions, business case development, financial and budget requirements and prioritization of actions.
- Work with Township staff in both municipalities to integrate work plans into relevant operational areas.
- Engage the community in projects and communications regarding community climate action and projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).
- Integrate required activities into a variety of functions to ensure all staff teams are integrating sustainability into their work plans.
Manage and plan Community Climate Action including:
- Manage the actions and implementation associated with all TransformWR actions that the Townships are responsible for.
- Engage in community climate action activities by representing the Townships at the ClimateActionWR Steering Committee table.
- Create a community climate action implementation plan for the Townships with associated timelines and budget requirements.
Generally this will include:
- Seek out funding opportunities to support the execution of corporate and community sustainability activities in both townships including building retrofits, community projects, and more.
- Support reporting requirements for the Townships to all stakeholders including but not limited to Municipal Council, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, SWR, and the ClimateActionWR program.
- Support capacity building and growing understanding of sustainability among staff in both Townships.
- Track and maintain budget and discretionary spending.
As a strong candidate for this role, you have the following skills, attributes, and experience:
- 5+ years project or program management experience, preferably in the municipal sector
- Strong knowledge of municipal corporate and community climate action best practices
- Outstanding organizational ability and project management skills
- Knowledge or budget development for sustainable operations including estimating
- Excellent communication skills, and ability to connect with a diversity of people in relation to changing their behaviors
- Proven leadership skills and experience working with a mix of staff and volunteers
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
- Ability to prioritize, operationalize and report back on tasks completed
- Ability to respond quickly to changing expectations
- A track record of thriving from intrinsically gratifying work; self-motivated
- Passion for environmental issues, for community-based leadership, and for improving the environmental sustainability of Waterloo Region
- Flexibility to lead & attend occasional morning and evening meetings
- A valid G-class driver’s license in good standing
The following are considered strong assets:
- Certified Energy Manager, or other sustainability related certifications
- Experience working in a consulting capacity
Work Location: This role is hybrid, with current SWR in-office day on Wednesday (subject to change). In-office days are also expected in both Township offices, with days of the week still to be determined. This position will also require on-site work during community events. The SWR office is located at evolv1 in Waterloo, Ontario.
Term: This is a 12 month full-time contract position based on a 40 hour work week. There is the possibility of renewal, dependent on funding.
Base Salary: $55,000 annually
Additional: Employer paid health benefits package (after 3 month probation period), professional development budget valued at .5% of salary, potential annual bonus payout (dependent upon annual organisational financial outcomes), flexible work hours, generous vacation package, 10 paid sick days available annually, discounted corporate GRT pass.
Reporting To: This role will report to both the SWR Executive Director and the CAOs of the Township of Wellesley and Township of Wilmot, or their designates.
