Renewable Energy Technician III (Solar)

Location: Sterling, Ohio 43143 (Onsite)

Employment Type: Temporary-to-Hire

Pay Rate: $25.52 - $42.50 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Renewable Energy Technician III to support the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of utility-scale solar and energy storage assets. This role requires a highly skilled technician capable of working independently, leading field activities, mentoring junior technicians, and ensuring the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.

The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting expertise, along with hands-on experience working with photovoltaic (PV) systems, high-voltage equipment, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Troubleshooting (70%)

  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on utility-scale solar facilities and energy storage systems.
  • Conduct testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Perform live electrical work in accordance with applicable safety standards and procedures.
  • Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot high-voltage systems, substations, collection systems, and distribution equipment.
  • Execute recommissioning activities including:
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • Irradiance and insolation performance testing
  • IV curve tracing
  • Thermal/infrared inspections
  • Torque verification
  • Battery capacity and efficiency testing
  • Asset performance evaluations
  • Support engineering teams with system upgrades, retrofits, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership & Training (10%)

  • Train, mentor, and oversee Renewable Energy Technicians I and II.
  • Validate technician competencies and provide technical guidance.
  • Support team development and field performance improvement.

Safety & Compliance (10%)

  • Conduct site safety assessments and equipment inspections.
  • Identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Lead daily safety meetings and ensure compliance with industry and company safety standards.
  • Complete required safety documentation accurately and thoroughly.

Administrative Responsibilities (5%)

  • Complete maintenance logs, work orders, service reports, inventory records, and timekeeping documentation.
  • Maintain accurate project and maintenance records.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation as required.

Additional Duties (5%)

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 4-5 years of experience in renewable energy, solar operations and maintenance, or a related technical field.
  • Successful completion of a Senior Renewable Energy Technician qualification program or equivalent experience preferred.

Required Certifications

  • OSHA 10 Certification (or equivalent)
  • GWO Basic Safety Training (BST)
  • GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT)
  • GWO Control of Hazardous Energies (CoHE)
  • GWO Slinger & Signaler Certification
  • NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B (or equivalent)

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with:
  • SCADA systems
  • Data Acquisition Systems (DAS)
  • Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • SAP resource planning and project management functions
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency with diagnostic and testing equipment, including:
  • Multimeters
  • Ammeters
  • Megohmmeters
  • IV Curve Tracers
  • Infrared Cameras
  • Pyranometers
  • Albedometers
  • Inclinometers
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead field teams.
  • Excellent communication and mentoring abilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, crouch, and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and structures exceeding 300 feet in height.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to operate company vehicles.

Working Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves working at utility-scale renewable energy facilities. Technicians will regularly work around:

  • High-voltage electrical equipment
  • Mechanical systems and moving components
  • Energy storage systems
  • Outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
  • Elevated work platforms and structures
