Position Description

Build your hands-on cemetery restoration skills at Yorktown National Cemetery through projects addressing a range of preservation needs, primarily cleaning and resetting headstones and footstone. Crew members will have the opportunity to develop their skills in cemetery restoration and general cultural landscape maintenance. The ideal candidate is excited about hands-on trades work and should be able to demonstrate or discuss their interest in the preservation field. Crew members must be able to commit to the position from September 1 – December 5, 2025, with weekends and federal holidays off.

Colonial National Historic Park – Yorktown National Cemetery

Program Dates: Sept 1 – December 5, 2025

Hours:

5-4-9 schedule (9 hour days and a Friday off every other week) M-F, 7:00a – 4:30p. Weekends and Federal Holidays Off

Member Qualifications (Essential Functions)

. Interest in historic preservation trades, specifically cemetery work

. Age restrictions: 18 years and up

. Must be able to commit to project dates

. Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions

. Must be able and willing to work outside in various temperatures and weather conditions.

. Willing and able to use hand and power tools to complete projects

. Clean head and foot stones

. Reset sinking footstones

. Leveling earthen materials around head and foot stones

Marginal Functions

. Survey and documentation of head and footstones

. General preservation and landscape maintenance

Preferred Qualifications

. Some preservation or general trades experience

. Experience working on a team

Training provided:

. Head and foot stone cleaning techniques using D2 solution

. Moving and lifting stones

. Pruning and historic landscape care

. General preservation maintenance
